Have you tried the Aveno eczema? Works well (according to friends, Piper's dry skin was just... dry skin).
My question: 1) Piper scratches her head when we nurse. She started it a few weeks ago. She doesn't tug on her ears or appear to be in pain, nor does her scalp appear particularly dry. I put some lotion on it. Is that weird?
2) 4.5mo, Pedi said she's ready for solids but when I put her in the high chair she kinda slumps to one side. Do I prop her up or just wait until she's a bit stronger. I'm not really in a hurry, FWIW.
@sessalee I would def wait longer for solids. 4.5 months is too young for anything besides rice cereal or oatmeal even by the old recommendations and the new recs are to wait until 6 months.
I totally agree. Your pedi sounds a little old school IMHO. The new recs are to wait until 6 months.

Yeah they recommended oatmeal for a few weeks then maybe other foods. I'm honestly tempted to just skip cereal.

Normal to me. It is probably comforting and relaxing

I would wait. We did a little before 6mo by like a week or 2. Her first food was sweet potato. She had excellent head control and was becoming a creeper watching us eat.
She's a total creeper while we eat with excellent head control. Her body just slumps a bit to the left while she's playing. She's super skinny and the high chair has no lateral support.
lessel DD had random dry patches when she was itty bitty. Swiping on some lotion quickly didn't help. So I started giving her a massage with a thick coat of Aveeno lotion after baths, really concentrating on the dry spots. They cleared up in a week or two.

I'd wait. I've read that parents really shouldn't start until 6 months anyway.

I skipped cereal. My pedi said it's not necessary.

I would. My pedi wanted me to do cereal for iron since my get only BM. I'm ignoring it though. I started with veggies and fruit like sweet potato, squash, apple. The first month they didn't consume much anyway but now have the hang of it. I also made my own oatmeal with banana and it was super easy.
QUESTION: How well could your 3mo pick up their head? During tummy time DD can hold hers up for 3-5 seconds, then she plops it down and cries. Normal, or should she be able to hold it up longer by now?

If you lay her on her back and slowly pull her into a sitting position by her arms, does she support her head or does it flop around? That was how my pedi checked for head control.
Question: how do you burp a breast-fed baby? I try to burp my baby and she just never seems to have do it when I try. Sometime she burps on her own, but I can't get her to do it myself. Lately she has taken to spitting out my nipple multiple times during nursing sessions. Which is really painful! I think she needs to burp when she does that, but I don't know what to do!

M scratches his head when he's tired. He does have eczema/generally itchy skin, but the head scratching happens only when he's tired. IDK--some weird tic or something. Maybe Piper's is similar?

1) When did your LO drop to 2 naps?
2) How much awake time for a 6 month old? C seems to hit the jackpot on his first nap with a 2 hr awake time. His other two naps are horrible though (25-30 min and take a lot longer to get down). If I keep at a 2 hr awake time it's really hard to only do 3 naps and a 7 pm bedtime. He's usually awake for 3 hrs before bedtime as is.
3) When did you introduce a sippy cup?
4) How often does your 6 month old breastfeed? Currently we are 5x/day and 1 dream feed. It seems like he's eating less during these feeds and maybe needs to drop a feed? He's also eating 2 solids/day, although breakfast is really small and dinner is around 1-1.5oz.

Not sure how old your DD is, but when they're really little, it can take forever to get a burp. I just keep trying, and eventually something comes out. If she is pulling back, arching, or crying, it is probably a burp. If she comfort nurses a lot, she may be spitting out your nipple because she doesn't actually want the milk-- will she take a pacifier? sometimes, if I walk around or jiggle while burping, it sort of shakes things loose.

Some days DS only does two naps, but a lot of times its 2 longer ones and a cat nap in late afternoon. He will stay awake 2-3 hours. I just put him down when he is acting tired. I started offering the sippy cup when we started solids but he doesn't really hold it great and only takes a sip or so. DS nurses usually 6x a day. we were doing 5 but teething has him waking up more and he's been wanting to nurse a second time overnight. We do solids for breakfast and dinner too, but he eats more like 4-5 oz.
Can I bust in and ask a question? I had scheduled my first appointment for 8w5d. However, I just found out that we will be taking a weekend trip with friends the weekend before. I really want to avoid telling people until we see a heartbeat, so I called and moved the appointment to 7w5d. The receptionist seemed a bit hesitant. Is this too early? Google tells me you should be able to see the heartbeat in the 6th week, so I thought I was safe. I obviously don't want to be too early and go into the weekend thinking that I'm losing the baby if I really just did need to be more patient. Anecdotes anyone?

I saw heartbeats at all 3 first appts: 7w6d, 7w, and 6w. Seeing a hb at 7w5d is completely normal...my OB does routine appts at 7 and 10 wks.

1) Lol. Not gonna touch the nap questions. DS still takes 4 crappy 30 minutes naps at 7 months. 2) See above. 3) He got a sippy cup at 6 months. I was surprised that he took to it pretty quickly. He doesn't drink a lot, but can actually do it.

For the two pregnancies I had where I did get to see the heartbeat, I was able to at 6 weeks with the second, and at my appt with the first I was 7w4d and also saw the HB. I think you would be fine. However, if you are nervous and prefer to wait for the later appointment why don't you just avoid telling your friends that weekend. Could you do some mocktails or something like that without being too obvious?

1. Just recently at 8 months when we started solids 2x a day. But they were taking 3 crappy naps.
2. 2 hours was about all they could handle at that age. They were awake 3 hours before bedtime. Now they are on a 2-3-3- schedule
3. Our pedi said not until 9 mos. I gave them sips recently. DS liked it, DD didn't care
4. I EP so might be different but this is their bottle schedule of BM: 530 am - back to bed, 8 am (up for day), 11 am, 2 pm, 5 pm, 730 pm bedtime. They get 130 ml at each bottle except bedtime is 150 ml.

I put her high up on my left shoulder, so my shoulder bone is at the bottom of her ribs. Then pat fairly hard on her back just above the diaper line.

Do you have her up nice and high on your shoulder? That's the only way I could burp DD2 was to have her high enough that my shoulder put pressure on her belly.
DD1 NEVER burped - breastfed or bottle fed (breastmilk). She just didn't burp and didn't seem to need me to force the issue.
@sessalee I'd hold off a little longer on solids, until she can hold herself upright in the high chair a bit more. I think we started AJ around 5.5 months, him staying upright in the HC better was the last "readiness sign" I was waiting on. (and since you mentioned maybe skipping cereal, that's what I did...we started with sweet potato puree mixed with BM)

Yeah, I think we will. It's a shame because she seems so interested in us eating, she stares at us. I think she'll love it.
@pennypie do you have a mirror above the car seat? J was a car seat hater, but once he discovered himself in that mirror, he's started to enjoy car rides more. We also have one of us next to him for car rides longer than 5-10 minutes when we're both in the car, to sing songs and replace pacifiers. The pacifier is a godsend, and so is cracking the window and letting him feel a little breeze. The other big thing that helped was adjusting the height of his shoulder straps. He seems much more comfortable now.

Thx for all the suggestions! I have not been holding her that high, much lower actually so I'll try that. I do think she needs to burp when she's fussing at my breast, so I hope this works!

Do you know your dr will do an ultrasound at that first appt? Mine doesn't do an US that early unless they need to date the pg. they wouldn't even try to find the HB with the Doppler until 10 weeks. So I'm not sure you'll hear the HB either way. The first time I heard the HB was 10 weeks and then we had our first U.S. Around 12 weeks I think.

I saw the heartbeat at 7 weeks. Provided your cycles are regular enough that you're pretty sure when you conceived, I think there's a high chance you'll be able to see it by then (assuming they're doing an ultrasound and not just the Doppler).
