Ok, so I don't really know anything about preschool. We currently have a nanny, and I guess my ideal would be to stop using her once we're into preschool...but the all I'm seeing are 1/2 day options when I Google.
When kids are in daycare, does the daycare provider typically also offer a preschool? My teacher friends seemed surprised I hadn't started to think about this, and if I wanted him in 3 year old preschool, I needed to get on a waiting list.
What do people do the rest of the day? Pay for a nanny and preschool? Pay for daycare and preschool? What am I looking for in a preschool? I guess I didn't realize they were run by the school district in many cases. I don't know where to start, I think I'm making this more complicated than needed.
We do in-home daycare + preschool. She does drop off and pick up at preschool. We limited our options to the only one she could do that with, as we can't do a 8:45 am drop off and a 11:45 pick up.
Around here, most people with nannies keep them when the kids start preschool (age 2/3). Full day school doesn't start here until universal pre-K at age 4.
Some of the preschools have before & after care that will cover the hours of the parents' workday, but the slots are very limited and fill up quickly.

We are actually struggling with the same thing. I think we have decided on a combo of Nanny and preschool. He will go to preschool either 2 or 3 mornings a week and the Nanny will pick him up on the days he has preschool and will work full days the days he doesn't.
What we are were are struggling with is do we send him 2 or 3 days. I am leaning towards 3 days because I think it will be better for him and create more consistency but it I more expensive.
If anyone wants to weigh in on what you think you are better - 2 or 3 days I would love to hear.

When we did 3 year old preschool, on the two days DS did that, he was watched by a sitter and she picked him up. He went to daycare the other 3 days a week. With DD, we no longer have a sitter option, so she won't do preschool until she is 4 and can do full day preschool. FWIW, I think its not big deal to skip preschool at age 3 if the logistics are too complicated.

2yo preschool for my DS is only 2 mornings a week, so we are keeping him with the nanny for the remainder of the time. I am guessing we will need a nanny until our youngest is in PreK, then we may be able to switch to an afternoon mother's helper.
Incidentally, doing a nanny share + part-time preschool is still much cheaper in my area than a full-time daycare center with a preschool curriculum.
