In the past, the local Canada Club has hosted a pitch-in barbecue picnic at the ambassador's house (they were kind enough to let me join).
Last year my Canadian friends got together casually to grill in the park, and they ended up choosing the same park that the local Somali community had picked to celebrate the Somali Republic Day! So they were singing 'O Canada' while surrounded by Somali flags.
This year we're going to do the same but at someone's house, because she just had a baby and we're using it as double duty to go see the newborn. I'm thinking about trying to make Nanaimo bars. It will probably be a disaster. (Does anyone have a recipe? If not, I'll try to use this one.)

July 1 is Hong Kong SAR day so we have the day off work. I'll be spending my day off accompanying my daughter to the second birthday of her French BFF. Maybe if I'm lucky some Canadians will show up. In any case I think it will be a very expat-y experience haha.
We used to have an awesome Canada Day celebration in Trafalgar Square with some fairly big name musicians, but it didn't happen last year, and it's not happening this year either. I think RIM was one of the main sponsors and when they took a dive the whole event collapsed. I just checked the embassy newsletter and there appear to be multiple events: a cruise, a picnic in Regent's Park, something at the crappy Maple Leaf pub. I probably won't be going to any of them. It's just not the same.
