1. Dinner recommendation. I don't eat mammals, want to make it reasonably MM, let's assume we can't have a reservation and we'll be staying in Rittenhouse Square.
2. The main reason we're going is to take a tour of the Mint (how MM are we???). And we'll go to the Barnes Foundation. Any other suggestions for people who know the city very well but who haven't been there much in the last 10 years? We'll be there for like 28 hours.
I am very excited that I have a morning meeting there fairly soon that is right by the Terminal Market (so I know where I'll be spending that afternoon...)
I just left, but I feel like I've already forgotten everything
Since you don't eat mammals, what about sushi? I like Doma (but that's in Fairmount, but close to the Barnes), Raw or Fat Salmon for sushi.
Or Ethiopian? There's a place at 20th and Walnut that has good vegetarian options.
I'm still in love with Buddakhan (Old City).
I've recently had good meals at Miles' Table (for brunch around 20th and South I think) and Entree (It's byob. Around 17th and South Street)
One of my fav (and inexpensive) Italian places is La Viola.
There are a bunch of pop up beer gardens...one near the Liberty Bell. One in front of the Art Museum at the Oval (not sure if that one has opened yet). Spruce Street Harbor is fun (by Penn's Landing).
I visit uwishunu.com to find out what's going on each weekend, which could give you some other ideas.

I used to take kids on a field trip to the mint each year. In case you're not already aware be sure to look up the restrictions on what you can/can't bring inside. No cameras, which includes cell phones. You have to have photo Id as well. I think maybe go through a metal detector too. It's been about 5 years so things may have changed.
Near Rittenhouse square - the Dandelion (British pub), Tria wine bar, the Continental (upscale diner), devil's alley bar and grill, Jose Pistolas (Mexican inspired craft beer bar), monk's cafe (probably the top belgian beer bar/restaurant in the U.S.), Alma de Cuba
Since you'll be at the mint, check out what exhibit is at the National Constitution Center. There's also an awesome beer garden near independence mall. There are some smaller and somewhat interesting things in that area that are usually free, like Carpenter's Hall, the Philosophical society, and the chemistry museum.
And yes, you need ID and have to do the metal detector and bag search at the mint. I was there in December.
Did you see that philly pizza place that was named best pizza in the US? They don't have a phone and they only make 40 pizzas per day, Wednesday through Saturday.
Wait -- at the Mint can I not *use* a cell phone or camera, or can I not even bring them there? The website makes it sound like I can have them on me but can't use them?
Photography, smoking, eating and drinking are prohibited. Prohibited items include, but are not limited to, weapons and large packages. All visitors are required to enter through a metal detector.
I am okay with not taking photos, and I will not have a weapon or large package.
I should have added that we'd prefer to stay away from places in NY (and since Stephen Starr has made a big move here, that includes Buddakan, Morimoto, and as of very recently, El Vez).
@wandering -- I used to live at 20th and Walnut (very close -- too close for a light sleeper -- to The Irish Pub). I am curious where the Ethiopian restaurant is!

Where is this?
Taconelli's, I'm guessing? I was never able to drag my husband there a decade ago (too far, too expensive to get there, too many rules, too much possibility of making the trip for nothing because they're sold out) and I doubt that's any different now! Sadly, though, because when he's not around I have waited 3-4 hours for pizza without regret.
You could try Zahav and sit at the bar. They have quite a few fish dishes and a handful of vegetarian options. It's in Society Hill so not convenient to RS but near the Mint.

Beddia? I was hoping you had heard of it so I wouldn't have to look it up. It's in Fishtown. Of course. It's pretty new.

Maybe things have changed. When I used to take the kids through on the field trip we definitely could not bring cell phones in if they had a camera. One parent would stand out in the street and hold all of the cell phones while the kids and other chaperones went in. It was a real pain!

At Taconellis you can call in advance and reserve your dough. It is far though, and even if you have reserved your dough you still wait for a long time to be seated.

I'd read that as "cell phones allowed, but you can't use it for photography"... but, I'd see if there's a number to call to double check.
For what it's worth, even the White House allows cell phones (but no photography).

It's called Almaz Cafe. Not sure how long it's been there, at least since 2009, but not sure about before that.
1. Go to Vedge (though you'll need a reservation) or HipCityVeg. Second any of the Tria's; I like the 12th and Spruce one best.
2. Constitution Center is great. Art Museum has an Impressionist exhibit right now. My fav place in the city is Sister Cities Park. The Spruce Harbor Park is nice too. I like the PHS Beer Garden at 15th and South.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

Depending on when you go to the Mint, I would go to the Independence beer garden. Or try to go by one of the beer gardens that are around your destinations if they are open around the time you are there. They are all awesome, but the Independence one is my favorite for selection and atmosphere.
Is Federal Doughnuts all it's cracked up to be? And relatively wait-free? We'll have one breakfast.
I should also mention that my husband will be super grumpy about any place where we have to wait more than a half an hour for a table.
It's pretty fast, but the interior is tiny, so I always get stuff to go. Anytime in the morning should be fine to get the good doughnuts - they sell out of the specialty ones first. They also have fried chicken, which I've never had. Their cold pressed coffee is good. There's a location on Sansom between 17th and 16th.
