I took vacation days for mid-October so now I just need a destination!
We live in Ohio and are looking to keep things relatively inexpensive but still want a fun trip (under $2000, less would be better). We don’t have passports. We’re both pretty open to any kind of trip – very active or very relaxed. I guess I’m leaning towards a little more relaxed because I’m burned out at work. And we’ve haven’t traveled much which makes it hard to choose.
I’ve been looking to Maine because a few coworkers went recently and absolutely loved it. DH mentioned Nashville.

Salem, MA - especially if you are into the whole Halloween/Autumn theme. There is SO much to do for the whole month. It doesn't sound like a great trip, but we went all the time growing up, and the whole town gets into the season/holiday. You can easily do a long weekend there for less than $2K.
If you've never been to Vegas it's a good time to go. It's still warm and sunny but not beastly hot, so you can do outdoorsy stuff (like hiking!), and you could do the Grand Canyon as a day or overnight trip, too. It also can be fairly cheap since so many airlines have flights there, you can usually find a good deal on a decent hotel and rental cars are cheap.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain
If I could piggy back, we, too are throwing together a last minute October trip out of STL. Front runners are Napa, New Mexico, or somewhere in CO. Any ideas or tips?
Also NOLA might be good (note I have not been but have heard it is a good time to go because some of the heat/humidity will be gone. We plan on going next October.)
