Hi, Coming over from ML to seek some help...
I have a 12 yo mutt who has been with us his entire life. He has a crate that we used when he was a pup, but he hasn't been in it in years. He was house-trained and very rarely had accidents. We moved two months ago and he is have frequent accidents in the new house, both pee and poop. His feeding and walking schedule have remained the same, and the house is about 3x larger than our former home. I'm not sure if the previous owners had a dog, but we had the floors done before we moved in, so I doubt he smells another dog. This is the 3rd (and final) time we've moved homes with him, and he did not have these issues the previous times- but he was also younger.
I brought him to the vet, and they didn't find anything.
Has anyone experienced this? Should I start crating him again? I would love any advice or tips on this!!! Thank you!!!
I would do a refresher course on the potty training with him as if he is a puppy again. Keep him tethered to you, reward him for pottying outside, etc. - all the things you'd do to housetrain a puppy.
Also, the house being 3x bigger might be confusing to him. He might not be interpreting the entire space as his "home". Where exactly is he peeing and pooping? If it's in rooms he almost never goes in, then he might think it's actually okay to potty there. I would confine him to a smaller area of the house at first and then gradually introduce each room with playtime and food. That way he recognizes the whole house as home.
