a related annecdote: a friend recently delivered her baby still in the sack of waters! How cool is that?
I've only seen pictures of this but it is really cool looking. Many cultures have beliefs about what it means for the future of the child. Usually it means that they are especially blessed in some way.
Nope. But I ended up with c-section both times, the second was scheduled for 5 days past my due date if I didn't go into labor on my own. So maybe it would have? First time I went into labor and my water broke 3 days after my due date.

I believe it is a prerequisite for becoming the Dalai Lama.
Yup - my water broke with all three, DD1 and DD2 I didn't really feel contractions until my water broke. With DD3, my membranes were stripped, I had cramping, then around midnight that night, my water broke and my contractions started to really come on.

I had AROM with dd1, dd2 and ds1. Membranes ruptured when ds2's body shot out. So *almost* born in caul. With my 8 month old, to my surprise, my membranes started leaking the evening of 38w3d. I was shocked. No contractions. Labor typically starts within 24 hours of rupture. Continued leaking into the next morning. Still no labor. Decided to induce after 17 hours of ROM. Mild/manageable contractions started about an hour later, but was in denial that it was actual labor instead of prodromal again.
DD1 my water broke and had her approximately 12 hours later. With DD2, had contractions, went in. The nurse checked me and accidentally broke my water. I was fully dialated and about to push when this happened.
It's been fun reading this responses in anticipation of baby #2 coming soon! With DS, my water broke a little after midnight at 39 weeks, didn't really have regular contractions. Went to the hospital around 3 or 4 am. Wasn't progressing so I got pitocin around 7 am I think, and he was born around noon.
So anxious to know when DD is going to make her arrival known! Due date is Aug 21.
My water breaking was my first sign of labor for both kids.
#1. Hot turkey sandwich for lunch, 10 hours later my water breaks, 12 hours after that DD is born (5 days before due date) #2. Hot turkey sandwich for lunch, 10 hours later my water breaks, less than 2 hours later DS is born. (4 days before due date)
Nope. I was induced with baby #2. But, while the Pitocin did nothing over the course of 16 hours, labor progressed quite quickly after my doctor broke my water for me.
windsorhate - so you are telling us all to have a hot turkey sandwich when we are ready to have a baby?
Yup! My boss joked it was the hot turkey sandwich that did it for #1 (we'd gone out to lunch that day). So when I got to the point where I was over being pregnant with #2, I told DH that we had to get a hot turkey sandwich for lunch to get things moving. Low and behold...
