I'm surprised at how forgiving many of the comments are. I am pretty laid back, but omg.
Ps. Totally not impressed that the parents showed up 45 mins after closing, but I would expect the daycare to call the parents the minute they closed. How does one overlook a baby?
Aren't there usually procedures in place when a parent is late. Or procedures for shutting down the building. I can't imagine how you just forget a kid is still there.

How awful! I'm just glad the baby is ok. I could see how this would happen - baby is sleeping, all the other kids leave, the worker cleans up the room, baby is still sleeping...

Our daycare flips the mattresses up at the end of the day. There would definitely be a visual clue that that crib should be looked at again. There is also a sign in/out sheet.
This is pretty shocking - definitely not enough/proper checks or procedures in place. It would make me wonder what else they don't have proper procedures for.

An article I read said that the mother and about six other parents had an agreement with the daycare. Their shifts end at 6,and they go straight to the DC to pick up. I don't blame the mother at all.

J's daycare did this too. I think that's one of the ways they make sure stuff like this doesn't happen.
But also, where was the mother that she was 45 mins late and didn't call to give a heads up or something? I'm NOT saying she is to blame obviously, but 45 mins after closing is pretty late. You'd think she have called and said something. I know I would have expected a call from my daycare if I wasn't there to pick J up by closing time and would have thought it odd if they didn't call.

This makes more sense then. Because I was wondering why the mother didn't call to say she was late or notice they didn't call her to ask where she was.

And this one specific evening she thought her husband had picked the child up, I think?

No, she said she thought that AFTER she arrived there and saw it was closed up and no one there. So she was confused and thought oh, since no one is here maybe my husband picked him up. Prior to finding no one there she expected to pick him up.
How terrifying. I'm so confused though, how this happens? Procedures for being late (even with a shift agreement, it seems she was definitely late for pick-up - this does not justify the treatment of her baby), procedure for locking/closing up.
Goes back to that 'daycare security' thread yesterday - I'm glad that our system has the computer check in/out as a means of controlling who is in the building and if anyone is left.
DH was about 10-15 mins late one time in our 2 years - there was a terrible accident on his commute and it took him 45 mins extra. He called, daycare reported a few parents were affected, and when he showed up one of DS's own teachers was sitting with DS in the office. They didn't even charge us because of the circumstances - though we did get that teacher a $25 gift card to thank her

No way... no how.... I would get that placed closed, or flame them in every place imaginable, stand out side and picket as parents tried to drop off their kids.

I read it as she thought that maybe her husband had picked the baby up when she got there to find the building locked and deserted, not that she thought he was supposed to do pick up that evening.
