After experimenting with a timer and a light in DD's room (she seemed to semi-understand the concept of "Do no get up until this light turns on"), I've decided that she might be ready for one of those "okay to wake" clocks. It seems like there's quite a few options... Any opinions on which one is the best? Any tips on how to teach your kid to use it?
has a nap timer on it as well, which is awesome for quiet time AND sleeping.
it took DS under a week to get it. he was in his crib at the time and we were having problems with him yelling for us whenever he felt like it. now he sits there and watches for it, sprints out of his room and comes and gets us when it turns green.
We have the gro-clock and love it but I never tried any others. We just explained to DD that when the stars are up it means its time for bed and when the sun comes up that means she can get up too. She took to it in literally one day and now asks for it to go to grandparents homes too.
ETA: I did not expect her to give two shits about it. She is not always this compliant!
DS is 3.5, and had been getting up at 5:30 or so for a few weeks. I got the "ok to wake" clock from Target. It works fine. It took him 2 days to get it. The advice I got from MMM was to set the clock to a realistic time. A clock isn't magically going to make an early riser sleep until 8am KWIM. So DS's is set to 6am. Most days he yells at 6:02 or 6:05 "MY LIGHT IS GREEN!"
We also have the OK to Wake clock. He sorta gets it, but on weekends it doesn't matter that I push it to 8am... he'll often still call for us at 7/7:30am It seems to work better on weekdays when I have it set for 7am.

We got this one about a month and a half ago. DS got it in 2-3 days. It has been a life saver; no more taking him back to his room at 5:30 a.m. when he thinks he's awake for the day.
He now gets mad at the clock if we forget to set the nap timer. "It didn't turn green, mama! It needs new batteries!"

This could be our problem. But he's normally up at 6:11 and we have it set for 6:30, so I didn't think that was TOO big a stretch. I mean, if it's going to just be set for the time he normally gets up, what's the point? I want this thing to buy me time in the morning!
I did it to stop him from waking up at 5:30 or 5:45. I cannot get up when it's dark, I just CANNOT. But he's not going to sleep a whole bunch later just because I wish he could. No clock is going to make him sleep in an extra hour or more, that's just completely unrealistic. So I set it for 6 so at least he's up after dawn heh. And that did work. He consistently gets up after 6 now. I get lucky occasionally and he sleeps until 6:30 or 6:45.
thanks you guys! I'm going to look for the okay to wake clock at Target today (and order off Amazon if I can't find it). My kid definitely tends to be a little spirited, so this will be interesting. I've been doing a light in her room on a timer this week and telling her that it is "night night time" until the light turns on. She is still talking (sort of loudly) until it comes on, but she's been laying down (and not screaming), which is an improvement. She mostly wakes at 6am sharp, but sometimes will wake a little earlier. I'm just hoping that the clock can keep her in bed (and maybe slightly quieter) until 6am...I don't even mind getting up at 6 on weekends, but anytime before that is just too much!
