We have a Maxi Cosi Air in DH's sedan. I think I actually like it more than my Nextfit because it's easier for DS to get in/out (lower sides) and doesn't have the PITA straps. It is a bitch to install though (so I hear).
I really like our Britax Boulevard ClickTight. We have it set up in the middle seat of our Corolla and can comfortably fit two tall people in the front seats. I also found it really easy to install.
Even though you want to buy on Amazon, go to BRU/BBB and test out whatever seats you are thinking about to make sure they fit in your car.
Are you only buying one seat? (Not sure what you meant by not spending $$$ on a seat for your H's car - if his car is for occasional use and not the long rides you listed, you could get a more basic seat like the Guide 65 - not quite as plush, but only $80.)
We have a 4ever in my car and love it (and got it at BRU with a 20% off coupon lol), and since my car tends to be used for long trips we spent the money. If we don't have to spend that much again on a good seat then we'd rather not. My H and I split daycare drop off and pick up and errands so a comfortable seat helps out that process.
I see that the Maxi Cosis are under $200 on Amazon right now so I think that's what we will likely do. DS is short (hence why he's still in a bucket in H's car - he's not hit max height yet but he's close...one more growth spurt and I'm on the hook for all kid transport).
We have an Evenflo 3-in-1 that's mid-range as far as price and available on Amazon. It's worked great so far. We use it in DH's car and for the babysitters.
We have a graco 4ever rear facing in H's Mazda 6. J gives me no problems going into it and always seems happy in it. He does give me a hard time going into a diono in my car.

We just bought a graco argos & graco 4ever. The argos is good for DD1 who will be out growing it sooner, but who I still wanted in a 5pt harness for just a little longer. It will convert to a high back booster & regular booster once she out grows the 5pt.
The 4ever is for DD2 who we plan to RF at least through age 2 - if we can get away with it longer then we will.
We have a van - BUT - I have noticed that there's a LOT more room than when we had the britax infant seat & DD1's first years true fit. I would look into those to see if they'll fit in your car.
