My dad has really gone too far since retiring. He spends all day on Fox News, and he has become such an extremist. I can't talk to him about hardly anything any more. His personality has really changed, and I often feel he is passively verbally attacking me (colleges are pushing the liberal agenda, all liberals are socialist assholes) via FB.

I think you just described my dad's family. I honestly think it has made them extra paranoid, and they view elections as some kind of war against socialism. The part that bothers me is that my teenage cousins regurgitate the same stuff they hear all day and it bothers me.
I always think people are beng ironic when they say Fox is fair and balanced. Honestly, though, I think the WSJ is even worse. As is the NYT (in the opposite way, obviously).

I agree there are worse ones, but Fox is the only one I hear repeatedly call themselves fair, balanced...I waffle back and forth on whether or not they're serious, haha

Didn't you know that if you say it enough times, it makes it true?
i have a brilliant and articulate (sarcasm) facebook friend who claims that the fact that CNN (the "communist news network" doncha know) didn't can anderson cooper when he came out PROVES that they are in cahoots with the liberal extremists
I hate Fox news, yet it is all they ever have on in my Dr's waiting room. It drives me crazy, I feel like I'm being brainwashed while waiting to see him :/
apalettepassion.wordpress.com/ WHO IS BONQUIQUI!?!?!?!??!

Before I clicked on this I thought I was going to have to throw you off a dock or something. Since when are they fair and balanced?
Your dad sounds like my MIL. I love her to death but man, the anti-Obama-isms and the Fox News quotes and "Bill Reilly said" make me want to scream. I either roll my eyes or counter, depending on the situation but man-oh-man it's exhausting either way.

Do we have the same dad?
Sadly, my dad has been this way as far as I can remember. He watches Fox News a lot and doesn't miss an episode of Bill O'Reily.
My grandma was the same way. All she watched was Fox News and Tom and Jerry cartoons.

my grandfather was always conservative, but he went off the deep end after my grandmother died. loud hate-mongering (like "let's all get guns and go sit on the mexican border and take care of business ourselves") far right wing vitriol 24/7 on the TV or radio. it was exhausting to be around him because i was so on edge all the time. i'm not saying that your dad is like that or will be like that at all, mel, but i can relate to a certain extent.
I just think it sucks that so many people are mistaking infotainment for news.
Fox News isn't news. It is a bunch of shows where people feed you their opinions based on actual events. When you hear things like "He's the pinhead of the week!" Do understand that this is not news you are watching.
We lost news when networks decided that they were going to make profits instead of providing information. The sensationalism is there because they need you to stick around for the next commercial break!
I know you added just kidding, but youreally aren't kidding. It's almost scary. We have no idea if dementia is in his family, because he has outlived almost all of his family members at 67.
And cville, your grandfather sounds exactly like my dad.
