There was nothing, to me, innocent about her post. It was willfully obtuse, ignorant, and insulting.
Really, her first post? Her second post, for sure. But her first one? I think it was obtuse, ignorant and insulting but I don't know if it was willfully so...she admitted to not reading the OP, just blindly posting. I don't think she was meaning to be rude, but that was kind of my point...we say stupid shit because we don't BOTHER to read. Or maybe I am wrong, I am open to being wrong. Maybe part of my white privilege is that I am too ready to presume people's intentions are good, or rather, not wrong. That's entirely possible.
If I just started a shitstorm with my post, please know that my silence from this point on is only because I am getting in my car to drive somewhere, not because I am hiding.
But to not even read the OP??? Come on now.
Look, I've absolutely been ignorant about issues before. Without fail. But JFC, there is 'not reading' then there is NOT READING. She did the latter and there is absolutely no excuse for it. The title of this thread is a dead giveaway that there is a comparison going on, a discussion. And when it's 5 pages long... o.k, maybe, JUST maybe, you can claim to not reading past page one. But you damn well read the OP and (preferably) a few of the replies to just get an overall sense of the thread.
The fact that the two missing white teens in FL have raised $289,796 in 3 days (2,538 people) versus Mr. Dubose's GFM total of $5480 in 10 days (147 people, of which I am one of) also speaks VOLUMES of just how little this country values black lives and how little we've progressed.
What the actual fuck. Thank you for sharing this. I have a donation to make.

For those worried about political stuff impacting employment--are your FB pages not completely locked down from public view? I get it, nothing is safe on the internet, but it would take some commitment for a potential employer to find somebody who knows you in real life and have them stalk your page.
I'm not saying, "YOU MUST START GETTING PUBLICLY POLITICAL NOW!", but I'm just wondering how big of a deal this actually is.
Yes, mine is. I rarely get political on it though.
I do fear retribution/consequences from my current employer. We have social media policies, and I'm friends with colleagues and some students. If I have these conversations (and I do), I prefer it be in person where we can discuss, and not where something I say can potentially be taken out of context and used against me.
This sums up what I was trying to figure out how to say perfectly. I'm not willing to risk having something I post be taken out of context and cause trouble for me at work, so I do what I can to keep the political/hot button topic discussions in person.

Yes, her first post. The gif was abhorrent.
Look at the title of the thread - it's right there. You don't even HAVE to read this thread to realize we aren't just talking about the lion. If the thread title was "Outrage over Cecil" then eh...I still think you should read the OP at least. But when you have names of the two of the largest news stories happening right now, even if you don't know who of those parties is, figure it out before you post. Read the OP. So yes. I'm standing by her first post being obtuse, ignorant, and insulting.

I'm here reading/listening - thanks, everyone for sharing. I just made a gift to DuBose's GoFundMe and posted about it on FB asking others to join me. I should be better in using my social media networks to call attention to issues like this so today's a start.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh yes, I could see that being the case.
I think she's Canadian. I don't know what the media there has shared with regard to Sam DuBose, or any of the myriad other black men and women killed by the police here in the States.
HOWEVER, that is no excuse for the level of tone deafness and ignorance she displayed here, ESPECIALLY when she was called out and posted a gross gif that only further served to illustrate her complete lack of respect and racial awareness.
nursewife - you really should apologize. You were fucking gross here.
MM lurker chiming in - the Sam DuBose case, as well as all the other cases of black men & women being killed by US police have been reported in the Canadian news and also discussed on Canadian talk shows so this should not be an excuse she can use unless she has buried her head totally in the sand. The most common comment I have heard, both on the news and talk shows, is when will the police that disagree with these acts finally start to speak out? I know there has to be many of them and don't understand why they aren't coming forward.
I really hate that we have reached 2015 and still need to make a race distinction. We are all human, we all matter, we all have value - why is it so hard for people to get that, or is my Canadian ignorance showing?

Especially on CEP!!!!
I just can't give her ANY out on this. None.
Ok. You're right. I was trying really hard to see some innocence in the initial post (obviously not the second). And not innocence for the sake of giving her an excuse, I don't think she deserves that after her second post. More because I feel like the act of posting in a thread, without bothering to read at least the OP...that in and of itself seems like an act of privilege. Regardless, when I first tried to write out my thoughts they seemed to make sense, now not so much, lol.

I'm not cutting her any slack. When you post in a thread, you should read it first. The ignorance is disgusting.

I totally agree with you - I was at the first post and absolutely appalled at the second one.

I think yes, because Canada has a huge racism problem as well.

Only chiming in to say there has been nothing on my local news here at all about Dubose (or any of the individual murders). I don't stay up late enough to watch the late night world news. We get Fox too but never watch it. I'm not sure whether they would have covered it. They certainly covered the various riots... Now I will go back to finishing reading through this thread.

I admit I now shy away from anything remotely serious on FB after Freddie Gray. The local news reached out to me for a comment, and when I refused they contacted my employer to ask questions about me. I then wiped my FB of any personal details and a last name. I just recently readded it.
But since then I only post nonsense about my kids.
But I'm here. I'm reading. I'm processing what you are all saying.

you're absolutely right, that was a stupid comment to add the end of my post (not sarcasm).

I agree with this. Once upon a time I think I argued that we didn't but after spending more time reading stuff here I think we do. I do think it is more openly visible in relation to larger immigrant populations here, but there are still significant race issues related to black people - newly immigrant or not. I think this is why I have the word 'cultural', it's gets thrown around a lot.

Yeah, MH had a comment of his published in the local paper. He had a warning convo with his boss about it.

WHAT?!
Yep. Luckily I'm friends with our head of public relations and her office is a few doors down from my classroom. She came running in to tell me and told her contacts at the station it was inappropriate.

I have been reading this thread and appreciate the dialogue very much. I haven't posted on FB much at all on current events, but I recently changed my newsfeed to show all CEPers and minority news first, and I have unfollowed all of the stupid white people (or unfriended), so I honestly hadn't noticed the sharp disparity.
On a completely side note, and not intending to explain anything, but genuinely interested - do you know if FB filters things in a racist way? That even if many people shared anything at all about #blacklivesmatter, that it won't be actually shared to the masses? I can almost guarantee it's very likely because people aren't sharing those things, but I also wonder if the small minority who are end up being effectively silenced by the weird newsfeed algorithm. I guess I don't trust that the media or companies will be transparent in that way.
I don't know about whether it's racist or anything, but it definitely filters things bizarrely. I will randomly go to someone's page to say happy birthday or share a link and see things that never came across my news feed. It's annoying.
And this is why I really just don't use FB anymore. It filters things so bizarrely that I don't actually get relevant/good updates. A quick peruse of my feed did show that the friends who tend to post political stuff posted about both Cecil and Sam, but I realize that my list tends to be more liberal (living in California can do that, lol) so it's not really representative of public sentiment. It's shameful that white people continue their radio silence on these issues when it's so clear we have a crisis on our hands.

I've come to see a lot of parallels between our aboriginal/white racism problems and American black/white racism problems, as well. It's different, but a lot of it is pretty similar.

I'm very late to the game, but I think it's interesting how different people use social media. I would guess that more people on twitter use it to implore social change and that more facebook users use it more to share personal pictures and less for social change. This is not supported, just how I use each. Facebook is for family/kid pictures and showing what I do and twitter is for sharing thoughts, politics, pop-culture, and finding news.
Maybe we're not still talking about the OP, but I wonder if there are studies on who and how people use each social media.
I think the irony of her posts is that they are perfect examples of how we white people say/do shit that seems innocent enough to us, without in anyway even beginning to contemplate how they are representative of our ignorance. I am sure she didn't INTEND to walk into this thread and post something that essentially proved the point of the OP, but the fact that she didn't even bother to read (which I have TOTALLY done too), kind of speaks to the mentality that it doesn't matter, whatever I have to say is important/appropriate/meaningful. And then, to top it off, posting a gif that involves African dancing...I mean, that just make it so, so much worse.
No, no, no. I'm not claiming her or anything that has to do with her/ involves her. No. There is ignorance then there is what she did.

PennyPenny clarified (and frankly I should have remembered this from my days covering cops years ago) but police are prohibited from speaking to the media etc, only the press officer can do that so there may be and likely are many who are angry about these situations but they can't express that because of those restrictions etc.
Ok, that makes sense. I should have thought of that and so should the media I've heard say the same thing - you'd think they would know about the restrictions.
