I do not consider this texting and driving. I do check my phone at stoplights - but never while the car is moving. I think the official answer to this depends on what the laws are in your area for phones and driving.
Yes, but I've done it before. I try not to look at my phone at all in the car anymore. It's a new law in my state to be hands free while driving and I'm pretty sure it includes texting while stopped too.
You aren't supposed to do it here and it's considered texting and driving. It does decrease situational awareness , when you think about it and traffic lights are prime locations for accidents.
Yes. I've broken myself of checking my phone at lights because I've realized that I am not a safe driver when I do this.
I wish we could just put cell phone jammers in cars that kept them from being usable when the car was in gear. I would hate not being able to use the phone in the passenger seat though.
Yes. I've seen someone get into a fender bender because they were texting on their phone at a stoplight, and then hit the gas and hit the car in front of them because they weren't paying attention.
This happened while I was pregnant with Zoe. The woman in the SUV behind us saw the turn lane to our left start moving and rammed into the back of us.

So, is this any different than doing something else while at a stop light? A couple people the other day said they tweezed their eyebrows, or something like that, I don't remember what. Nobody said anything about that, so I'm just curious. Just to be clear, I'm not judging this.
I do look at my phone at stop lights. But, I will not take my foot off the brake pedal until my phone is down, regardless of whether or not the cars around me are moving.
With that said, I hate that I do it, and would like to break the habit. I should just leave my purse in the backseat.
I feel like anyone who does this should make an effort to stop before our kids are much older. That way they don't have the influence for when they are older.

Wasn't it was in a FFFC, though? So they knew it was flameful....
A lot of accidents are caused by not having situational awareness. Phones take that away big time. It's takes a lot of cognitive juggling to be dealing with a car, unlocking a phone and immersing yourself in a text or Facebook even if stopped at a light. Also, if we do this how do we then tell our kids to not do it who will likely be even more attached to their technology? I don't want my kids ever texting while the car is not parked and in park.

lolaburns, I honestly have no idea if it was a FFFC or not. I just remember seeing one or two people post it. I really didn't think much of it until I saw this post.
I completely agree with you on all accounts. If I don't stop doing this, I will be the biggest hypocrite when it comes time for my child to drive, and I don't want that. Excellent point/reason for stopping.
I have done it in the past especially when stuck at the train tracks but I've started leaving my phone in the back. Texting and driving and distracted driving in general makes me so anxious,I don't want to be a part of the problem and while the line is blurry because you are "stopped" it doesn't matter. Like Lola said it decreases situational awareness and probably contributes to even more traffic light accidents.
I wish phones just wouldn't work when a car is on. We survived without them for a long time and did just fine being out of contact with the word for minutes at a time
I do need gps though so I'm torn . I'm bad at directions

I feel like I need to delete FB from my phone or something. I don't even really get any texts in the car. Nothing important. I have Bluetooth and if it was VERY important, someone could call me and I could easily answer.
