Either buy (kindle/nook apps. I have an old nook) or on digital loan from the library. It makes taking books on trips so much easier. I do adjust the screen contrast to make it easier to read.
I still buy/borrow real books. They are much easier for my commute.
I have a kindle (2, actually), but because I buy and borrow kindle books, I will sometimes read them on my phone (an iPhone 6+). It's harder on the eyes, but it works when I have an unexpectedly long wait or something.
I use my Kindle Fire, which is the same as an iPad essentially. I have no issues with it. I like that I can travel and only need to take one item with me rather than separate items (book, tablet, magazine, etc.).
I don't like reading on a tablet. I love my Kindle, though, far more than a paper book. I rarely read paper books anymore. A Kindle is just so much easier to hold, read on the elliptical at the gym, read in bed, etc.
If you're not interested in a Kindle, though, I'd stick with real books. Reading on an iPad is hard because of the lighting and it's too big for me.
I prefer paper over my old Kindle except when I'm traveling (for space reasons), but electronic devices are really awesome for checking out library books. No need to venture outside your house! I'm guessing about 75% of the books I read in a year are paper and the rest are electronic.
I don't like to read books on my iPad (I read mostly before bed and don't want to be near something so lit up when I'd rather be sleeping). But I'll do it sometimes when I can't get a book from my library for Kindle. I love reading magazines on my Kindle -- so pretty on the retina display.
I used to be anti-ereader but I really love my Kindle. So easy to get new books, cheaper (because I usually get them from my library) and so much more portable. I would not want to read as much as I do on an iPad.

I have an ipad mini. I almost exclusively read books on there. Sometimes I buy one via the Kindle app but when I lived in the states I would borrow them via the library2go system. It still downloads to my kindle app and a book is available for 3 weeks. If I am not done reading by then, I just make sure to disconnect wifi when reading so it doesn't try to tell me my subscription is over .
