Lo just started daycare, I'm going out at lunch to look for either kids shampoo with tea tree oil or I'll buy a bottle of tt oil and put it in her shampoo I already have. I just learned about fairytale shampoo with rosemary and tea tree but I don't know if it's tear free.
My DD2 got lice in January and gave it to me (shudder) and it was definitely pesticide resistant because the Nix nothing. It was a long 2 weeks of constant combing to finally get rid of it.
We use fairy tales brand lice repelling products. My older DD didn't catch lice from her sister and me despite sharing a brush with her sister and I think it's because she was using lice repelling shampoo at the time.
The good news is that lice isn't the end of the world. Annoying? Yes, but not the end of the world. You can get rid of it without pesticides, it just requires more effort.
I also now make my DD with longer hair wear it up at school.
ETA: I also got prescriptions from both my doctor and the pediatrician, but the pharmacy didn't stick it so it took like 2 weeks for it to come in. By then I had already gotten rid of it via combing. But now I have the prescription shampoos for future outbreaks.

We had an outbreak about a month ago. Both kids got it. It was not nearly the hell I expected. But, I was diligent about picking through their hair every night (well, I cut DS's hair very short, so that was easy); washing sheets, towels, pajamas every night; putting DD's hair up in a ponytail with hairspray; etc. The worst part by far was all the laundry I generated by doing three sets of sheets every night.
The easiest way to get rid of lice is tea tree oil. It will get rid of mutant lice, a bottle costs $6 in the first aid area of a pharmacy, and it will last forever.
I actually think this should be included in some sort of PSA to parents of all school age children.
Extra strength Denorex is a widely available anti-dandruff shampoo that contains coal tar, it will also kill the hell out of lice. No picking required. Lather up and let that shit sit for a few minutes and rinse. Shampoo every other day for a two weeks. You kill all the live bugs and the newly hatched are killed before they can lay eggs, and they'll all hatch within 10 days. For a whopping $8 bottle of shampoo.
I feel like, with many things, there's a whole industry built around convincing parents that their kid will have lice forever if they dont't drop everything and spend umpteen hours and $$$ trying to get rid of it.

If this is true, I will love you forever. And ever. And ever.

summer, this post does trigger a memory of my mother using tar shampoo in my hair as a kid. I'm reading tea tree is the next coming to keeping lice away.
