I've never been to either, and my husband suggested a possible visit for next summer. I'd love to have info from anyone who has been, where you stayed, what activities you did, etc.
We are nature lovers and I am interested in sustainable living, would love to stay on a farm or near places like that. We also love the water!
In Maine, I've been to Portland and Lake Sebago. We were there for a wedding, but we spent a night in Portland first. We had lunch down by the water, then walked around the different shops. Portland was a really cute city, but it was too cold when we were there (late October). In the summer, I'd do a lobster boat cruise in the harbor, and tour the scenic lighthouses along the coast. Lake Sebago was an easy drive from Portland. It was lovely in the fall, and I imagine in the summer there are tons of lake activities. There are also cute towns along the way, and outlets for shopping.
In Vermont, I've been to Burlington and Waterbury. In Burlington, a cruise on Lake Champlain and plenty of shopping. I used Waterbury as a base for driving around the area and doing some cute stuff, like the Ben and Jerry factory tour and a maple syrup farm. The weather is really nice in the summer - I did some hiking, but I don't remember the name of the trail (it was a several years ago).
I live in Vermont and it would be really easy to do a week long trip so you can experience both Maine and VT.
Burlington and the Lake Champlain Region is my favorite part of VT. There is a lot to do, whether you want to hike, bike, swim, shop, relax, take in a show, eat out, tour a farm, etc. Not sure where you are coming from, but Burlington also has its own airport.
From Burlington I think you can be to ME within a few hours, but as the bad new englander that I am, I have not been to Maine since MIDDLE SCHOOL (we are rectifying that next summer).
I've visited Mt. Desert Island in Maine twice, and LOVED it. Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Somes Sound are all on the island. A majority of the island is Acadia National Park which has many different hiking trails.
The island supports itself very well. The only chain restaurant on the entire island is a subway - the rest are mom & pop's restaurants & fine dining.
A beautiful area if you can go! I always say that if I had to move to NE, I'd move there
