Wow, that's really cool!
I have nothing to report. I need to follow up with the places I've interviewed, but nothing new has come up. I leave for vacation on Wednesday(!!!) so that's occupying most of my mental bandwidth right now
Wow Carrots, he sounds like a great boss. He shows a lot of empathy and a nice personality. Best of luck to you with whatever works out!
I was just thinking how refreshing it would be to work for someone this rational and empathetic. You clearly made the right move by being candid with him, carrots.
My first performance review at my new job is either tomorrow or Wednesday :-# This will be my first performance review since 2009, in fact (at my prior jobs reviews were few and far between, but negative feedback was doled out generously to all!).
My heart almost jumped out of my chest when my boss mentioned it today. I hate how much my old job fucked me up.
Thanks carrotsmakemefat - I meant to post earlier, but life got in the way.
I'm in PMP boot camp this week. So far, it is intense. 8am-6pm with a 30 minute lunch break. Whew! Then I got home to dog pee, 90 minutes of work work, and I still officially have 2 hours of homework. Yeah, that's probably not all happening.
So my career improvement for the week is to pass the PMP exam on Friday!
This week is my state HR conference so I'm spending Monday through Wednesday going to those sessions. Today's keynote was the author of the book Quiet. She had some interesting points about the value of introverts, but her speaking style was so distracting. The rest of the day was spent in legal boot camp and that's where I'll be at for most of my sessions over the next few days. I'm kind of ready to take a break from the law, I think.
New job is going well. Have a meeting with supervisor later this week with some project feedback so we will see how that goes.
Hi, I'll go ahead and post an update, though I'm still new to this group/board. Hope you all don't mind...
Had an interview today (after last week's pretty indepth phone interview) with a panel of three, and I think it went fairly well. I answered the questions well and carried on a decent rapport. Tomorrow I'll send TY cards and see what happens.
I also had a weird thing happen today. Our CEO, who is very cool and with whom I have often had heart-to-heart convos about what's working/not working with our org, stopped by my desk to ask how I was recovering from my trip. She then said, "especially with what you're taking on," and I mentioned a project I just got handed and she said, "oh, that too." So now I'm wondering what new thing my CMO hasn't informed me about yet (she's notorious for that). Sigh.
One promotion I think is definitely off the table. Even if I made the list, I don't think I will pursue because the person that would be my boss has no idea what they are doing and has little no experience in the large requirement world. And they have shown no interest in learning.
The other one, who knows. Our new boss starts tomorrow and their credentials are mixed. So I'm sure they will be part of the selection.
I'm going to get my certification to work in a school setting. I've always been adamantly against it but I have the training and education so I think it's worth at least trying until something else comes along. I mean, the hours and summers off would be nice. I emailed a recruiter last night for a PT school position with an excellent commute and already have an offer to interview pending this cert.

Carrots that's awesome!
I actually got my resume done and fired it off to someone for review and just remembered I need to add something to it. I also got 2 more references lined up from prior jobs.
So tonight I will probably start applying to jobs, eek!
Review just happened and went really well! All very positive. And I even got a raise! Was not expecting to be eligible for one yet.
ETA: Adding that my boss had a lot of "Do you like the work you're doing?" "Is your commute okay?" "Is the travel okay?" questions for me. I've had like 3 reviews in my entire career so I'm not an expert at what to expect, but such a difference to have a boss who actually cares about these kinds of things.
As a friend who left my old firm for similar pastures at around the same time as I did says "It's so nice to work for someone who actually wants you to work there." Definitely a new feeling for us!
Let's see... Interviews last week went well. Both asked for references, so I sent those yesterday. I heard back from one right away thanking me and saying they would keep me posted as things progress. Radio silence from the other. I know it's been less than a day, but that's the job I'd prefer.
When I told my boss, he was awesome. Said he's sad to lost me but that he wants me to get the best job that will make me happy. I heart him.
H had his first day yesterday and it was great. He's so glad to be back in his old job and working with his friends again.
womet - did your H move already? and excellent on the responses. Although, there is a small part of me that was hoping I could get you to join me lol. I'm losing my awesome statistician/study director. Speaking of, I think I'll call her and see how her interview went.

He left here on Saturday and got to MD on Sunday.
I did look at the posting, and I'm not sure I'd be the best fit for it. Thanks for keeping me in mind though.
tacom we don't have "flextime" so I have negotiated a little bit of an untraditional offer....won't be cutting pay but will be foregoing some other comp that is slush fundy stuff.
I think 4 day week would be pretty great........but maybe they just make me want to work even less? Downward spiral!

Wow, Carrots! That's awesome!
As for me, well, I found out about a week and a half ago that I got that other position at my school. It's a pay bump, and it's a WAY cushier job. I know it was the right thing to do, but I've been super anxious about starting it (school starts on Monday). The supervisor is much more strict and by-the-book, and I like to joke around, so I'm really afraid that our personalities won't mesh well. I hope I'm wrong. I also found that she's much less flexible than my last supervisor, which is causing me to re-coordinate school pick-up for one of my kids. I honestly have no idea what I'm going to do about that. Ugh. I'm frustrated because the job seemed so perfect, but now it's causing me all this stress and it hasn't even started yet. I'm sure it will all work out in the end, though.
Late to this, but @shoegal this will give you a whole day to do errands, right honestly getting that stuff done during business hours is the best since the stores are empty.

Kona this seriously made me LOL
I am most excited about going to the gym and walking to the library right after. I have outsourced nearly all of my chores, but can't figure out the library part so ZOMG that will be huge.
As I said to tacom, I am worried that this will trigger a big desire to then have 4 day weeks, then 3 days weeks....3 days would not be possible without dipping into base salary which is NOT helpful for early retirement!
carrotsmakemefat I haven't been good at following the back story on your job, but if you are up for / positioning for a promotion and turning down other opps for it, then perhaps a coffee meeting with the hiring manager / person in power is in order.
I suggest not joking about it (its your career, which is serious) and instead directly gunning for the job in a respectful way, while confirming the timeline so you can draw a line in the sand for yourself.
Good luck!!!!!!
(PS. Ask For It is a great book for situations like these - includes research and tactics on negotiations / asking for what you deserve.)
carrotsmakemefat - I'm honestly not sure. @shoegal's advice would work in the private sector, but given its a fed job that has been posted and such, you run the risk of getting the hiring manager in a position of being accused of PPPs. I'd get someone who didn't apply to ask the status at a staff meeting, but that's me. And we know how well I've been doing at promotions. Lol
Speaking of, did I mention I have an interview next week for an internal promotion in another group? I'm kind of meh on it in general, but I really need to not work for my big boss anymore. I get seriously angry every time he interrupts me (and others) and demeans us. I'm getting to the point where I'm afraid I'll hit unprofessional. 20 years of work and I've never been in this situation before. Several of us are documenting everything and we are seeing patterns that he only speaks to the women this way. It's everything from being interrupting with what he thinks we might say, to dismissing staff concerns, to saying things like "I'll have to get Ruby and Jane back to work" (in reference to the length of a meeting). Dude, we are well educated professionals who have been doing this for 15 years. You don't "get us back to work."
Also, I'm now so sensitive to men interrupting me, I got so angry I had to walk out of my PMP class last week. I was trying to ask a question, before I got halfway through, the instructor interrupted and answered the question he thought I was asking. I said "if you would let me finish my questions... And then finished it. The he answered it wrong again. Said "no" then proceeded to explain exactly what I said (which would have been a yes to my question).
I need a way to deal with this. Because I am so friggin sensitive to it now, I could actually feel my blood pressure rise during that. #nothealthy
rubytue, why wouldn't speaking with the hiring manager directly about the role, and presenting yourself as a strong candidate before the formal process opens up, be helpful for a fed job? Would it actually hurt your application!?

Before is good. But in carrot's case, the formal process has started. Applications are already in and the hiring manager should have the resumes from HR soon.
But even then, if there are other internal candidates, the selecting official could be accused of preselection, which is a prohibited personal practice (PPP) - but everyone knows it happens.
For example, when my boss's position was about to open, there were 3 viable internal candidates interested in the position. Another manager, who ended up on the selection panel, talked person 4 into applying for the position. She wasn't even interested originally. Well lo and behold, of the 4 internal candidates, she was the only one to make round 2. Had she gotten the position, candidates 1-3 could grieve it because she was preselected.
I tend to be really conservative though. And, like I said, it's gotten me no where.
