I just don't understand why people that are good homeschoolers and doing it all well would object to being checked in. Especially if that means that other children being forgotten, abused, malnourished etc. Are identified.
I don't get homeschooling. I mean I'm smart I have masters degree, but hell if I want to attempt to teach my child. I wouldn't know where to begin or what tools are needed.
We had a student who couldn't pass basic world geography, algebra I, etc as a freshman. He was homeschooled by his mother who told us she only had her GED and got a B in every class including chemistry! Totally legit I am sure.
To be fair I will say I have seen some families do a great job at homeschooling and their children are at or beyond grade level and well adjusted.
BUT most of the time when I get a student that has been "homeschooled" it's not a good experience. They are often so far behind and the parents refuse to believe it and just think we're not challenging them enough. It's typically not a good experience.
I was just thinking about starting a thread about homeschooling here the other day. I have lots of thoughts, lol.
the anti-vaxxers in my area have started to mobilize and form their own preschool co-ops, a precurser to homeschooling I assume. These are non-religious people. None have a background in education
I like the comment about how a child's education should be none of the government's business, because do we really need a country full of productive contributing citizens.

I can't believe that she doesn't see the irony in arguing the government needs to stay out of her schooling, but it's no problem with her legislating other people's uteruses.
Isn't flgirl the one who claimed to exercise her fetus in the womb? Or something? Am I making that up? lol
She has made some dubious claims. I need to do my due diligence, but I think her kids were doing gymnastics moves and could eat perfectly off of fine china by 12 months. Or something like that.
Completely non-religious reasons. My mom has a degree in education, and always wanted to do it, but didn't. I got involved in some pretty nasty meal girl shit in 5th grade, and after seeing what middle school did to my older cousin, she decided that was a good time.
Totally agree that it shouldn't be allowed for just anyone, and that there needs to be a lot of oversight. I believe she had to submit lesson plans, and I had to pass the normal standardized tests.
There is a woman I know as a friend of a friend who is homeschooling her kids and is barely literate. I am not exaggerating or being mean, it's something she admits. I just don't understand it.

I'm normal, though, I promise!
Totally anecdotal but it feels like it's morphed from this rare, highly circumstantial decision into an extreme way to exert total control. It just doesn't read as healthy for any party. I'm not against it totally but I want a lot of oversight because unfortunately I think a lot of these kids need to have an advocate in their lives that aren't their parents.
