I'm a CPA, but this is obviously not official advice. Voluntary disclosure can help a taxpayer avoid civil penalties and possibly criminal prosecution by voluntarily becoming compliant with the tax law, and by correcting prior and current required filings. I would strongly recommend hiring a tax lawyer to navigate the proceedings.
Overall, it is a much better route than being prosecuted for tax evasion.
But where have you heard of this? CPA publications or meetings? And which civil penalties do you understand to be avoided? Civil fraud penalties? Accuracy related penalties?
I'm a CPA and I have heard of it. Probably in an article or email from the Aicpa or similar. I don't know the details though, as I am not a tax person. Like, at all.
