I have booze and pizza and TV preloaded for me. It's going to be a long night.
Long story short after DS shrieked all night in a way I'd never heard him before I took him to the ER at 330am becuase I thought he had either ruptured an ear drum or swallowed some poison I didn't even know we had. (Hey, it was 330am. I wasn't exactly rational at that point).
Dr. pried his mouth open. He has a nasty version of HFM. Good news is, it's mainly is mouth. Bad news is, it burns the worst.
Dr. gave him what amounts to baby vicodin and RX for the rest. Which his actual pedi called later and told me to take it to Walmart because it's the only place in town that will flavor that particular drug. 45 minutes of sheer Walmart hassle later and late for my own drs. appt. I have it.
After being up since 3pm yesterday afternoon, my MIL got him fitfully to sleep but asleep.
Pedi is worried about dehydration though. Yay. I stocked up on popsicles and pedialyte and 10 other things I thought he'd remotrely consider drinking.
My older son had a bad case of HFM when he was 2. I would try to get him to drink about a half hour after the pain Meds so they were at full effect. I let ice cream melt in a bowl and he would "drink" that. Obviously, a milkshake would work too.
My daughter ate strawberry Greek yogurt for 4 days. Not joking.
It sucks so much. Worst sore throat I have ever had, hands down.
I'm gathering.
Even last winter when he was so sick he was listless and 104 fever he was not this miserable.
It's bad. Like he's still at my MILs asleep. I'm home alone. I swear to God I hear him.
Poor kid.
I'm also starting to think DD may have had a milder case last week and now I feel bad. DS was teething so getting Motrin. DD started complaining her mouth hurt. I thought she just wanted drugs too and sort of ignored it. :/ She's always been my "tough" kid so it's hard to know with her.

I took a lot of Advil for 5 days and it NEVER relieved the pain for the entire 4 hours. It also made it really hard to sleep.
I'd try something like that. If he's too young to follow directions, I'd just give a small dose and have him drink it.
I'm filing this for future reference.
They specifically told me no benadryl because the painkiller the pedi gave me has a decently high alcohol content for a kid. It works great and he seems fine with it, but they warned me to the ends of the earth to not mix it with anything other than Motrin. He'll either be high as a kite and completely wound or asleep for days.
