I just listen. I don't offer any words of "advice" or "wisdom" because I know it would be futile and likely fall on deaf ears.
Sharing such experiences is so very intimate and I've gleaned a better understanding of my husband's approach to life when he does share anything. And I know that my life experiences pale next to these things. And so, I simply listen.
Just listen. Most of the time when we share stories like that it's because we just want somebody else to hear it and understand part of what we went through (I'm AD AF and have been deployed a few times). Some stories are funny, some are silly, some cool, and some heart-breaking. Just listen (and laugh, if appropriate). Saying "Thanks for sharing that with me" is good too.

Yep, I just listen. Occasionally I'll ask questions. Or I interject with a "how awful!" but mostly it's listening time. He just wants to share some of the most powerful experiences in his life with the person who matters most to him.
