We flew Frontier once when it was the cheapest/ best option. Flight delayed, sat on the tarmac for 1.5 hrs. Certainly not Frontier's fault, but we missed a connection that we may have made if they would have tried to implement a connections de-board first, which we were surprised they did not. We ended up getting a credit that expired in a year, & never used it. So yes, I'd compare it to Spirit.
The few times I've flown them the planes have been dirty and unkempt. If they can't even keep the interior clean I cannot imagine what that says for the mechanical workings of the plane.
I recommend Alaska Air. It's very possible that they're not available where you're going, but by far they have been the most comfortable, amiable, and on-time flights.

Lol. Alaska Air always comes up on Kayak and its always $1000 to go anywhere. Maybe it's a regional thing
I've flown them once. It's a budget airline and feels like one. They charge for everything so don't expect water unless you want to pay $4.00+ for it. I had a layover on it and it was on time.
I'm flying spirit next week and am not looking forward to it.
I can't believe you are allowed to book flights anymore.
I have not flown Frontier, but Spirit sucks. That being said, I would fly it again if it was less than a 2 hour flight and I didn't need anything more than a back pack. Can't beat the price. I would not do it with kids.
We flew them last year to Denver and it was a awful trip getting there, we had to check our bag at least an hour before the flight leaves but the counter didnt open until 65 minutes before our flight time and we were not the first in line so they wouldnt check our bag nor would they send it on the later flight we had to completely reschedule ourselves for 4 hours later. it was a cluster

Right?
No kids on this trip, so if it sucks, at least they aren't in the mix. It's almost exactly 2 hours. I prepaid to check our suitcases, and even with the seat up charges it was still cheaper than our other options. Fingers crossed we survive!

You will absolutely survive. The real question is: Did you book the right date?
