I've had my eye on a specific Fisher Price toy for Christmas for a while now. It's an older toy and probably discontinued. The price kept fluctuating from the $39.99 to almost $80. The last time it was at $39.99, I pulled the trigger. I just got an email saying they are canceling my order because they do not have enough stoock to fill it. However, when I look the item back up on Amazon it still says there are 3 in stock - of course the price is almost $70 now.
What do you think? Will complaining do me any good?

What is happening is you are hitting "add to cart" when third-party seller X offers wins the Buy Box with a price $39.99, and then they try to fulfill the order and oops its out of stock, and then when you go back to the product page, seller X doesn't have any in stock so they can't win the Buy Box, and instead seller Y gets the Buy Box with a price of $70. ETA or it is seller X both times and they are just very slow to update their inventory on Amazon.
The most you can really do is give seller X a negative rating for saying they had something in stock but they didn't (this is common with third party sellers, and Amazon tries to police it, so giving them a negative rating actually accomplishes something). Or you can email the third-party seller (you probably have their customer service email) and ask for a $10 discount on something else or else you'll leave them a negative review for listing an item but not having it in stock.
Unfortunately toys are really susceptible to price swings, especially from small third-party sellers, just because of the way the toy business works.
I don't think 3rd party sellers that are fulfilled by amazon can just go in and update their inventory. Amazon keeps track of the inventory and tells the seller what they have and what they don't. I would not jump to giving the seller a bad review but I don't know that I totally understand what happened here.
By chance is this the record player, because this exact same thing happened to me on Amazon.

No specific advice on that issue but I ordered a cash register with conveyor belt during Prime day. Nor sure if it's the same one but maybe there is a newer model you could get cheaper?
Eta: I got the fisher price serving surprises one. I think it is the same one you are talking about. The price was 39.99 and I got it for $25 with Prime day sale. Sorry, I was thinking there was a newer version you could get.
