This comment right here: "Ah, catfishing. Starts out as a lark, something fun to do while you’re bored, and then next thing you know you’re in England wearing a wool hat and a strap-on."
YES, I am like what does the hat have to do with it? Or the bathing suit? I don't understand how any of these things went together or why they were used!
The article said that "Kye" told her that "he" had a brain tumor, so I'm thinking the hat was to hid that she actually did have hair, and that there wasn't actually any chemo involved or that she didn't actually have "his" head shaved in order to have the tumor removed surgically.
I saw this scenario on a Sally Jesse Rafael show in the 90s. A transgendered woman (who simply said at the time that she was a woman physically who felt like a man on the inside) wrapped her breasts to lock them down tight and insisted on it being dark when they had sex. She also said she was uncomfortable receiving oral sex so the girlfriend never had an opportunity to get up close and personal. She also said told her girlfriend that she had a back injury and that is why she had to wear the wrap. She was on the Sally Jesse show to reveal that she was really a woman and hoped the girlfriend would still want to have a relationship with her.
I don't like that someone was tricked. I was actually and naively tricked the first time I had sex and I know it doesn't make ya feel real great. (eta - not by a woman... just... conniving boy).
But I also think people are a lot less afraid to just be open about who they are if we are accepting as a culture and then these situations wouldn't happen - publicizing them only spurs on fear mongering of transgendered persons tricking someone.
I say be who you are and you won't have trouble getting some. On the Real L word Whitney used a strap on with her partner once. But they were both women consenting to have sex with the same sex. And it was hot. Just sayin'.

Wooly hat = hair growing back after chemo/shaving for treatment (bonus covers catfish's real girl hair)
Bathing suit = required compression type thing b/c "Kye" had bandages on his torso so he had to wear that (bonus sucks in catfish's woman boobs)
It's the blindfold that gets me... if you're sympathetic and caring for someone who just went through a huge health issue, why would you not want to see this person, at least clothed, when you first met them to have sex?

I KNOW WHICH ONE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!! It's exactly what I thought of when I first read this.
Woman Removes Blindfold, Discovers Her Boyfriend Is Actually a Woman in a Swimsuit and a Strap On
25-year-old Gayle Newland of Willaston, Cheshire is on trial in the UK for five counts of sexual assault against her female friend—according to the alleged victim, Newland pretended to be a Filipino-Latino man named Kye Fortune, developed a relationship with the woman over the internet and on the phone, and later had sex with her on several occasions with a prosthetic penis while the woman was blindfolded.
Hmm!
According to The Telegraph, the alleged victim met “Kye” over Facebook in 2011, who she believed was recovering from a brain tumor and anxious about his appearance.
During this time, the complainant said she met Newland - who became a “really good friend” and said she knew Kye. Eventually, the complainant and Kye decided to finally meet in person at a Chester hotel, the jury heard.
She told police the only stipulation that Kye made was that she wear a blindfold because he was “anxious about the way he looked” and “could not walk properly” due to nerve and muscle damage. The Chester Chronicle reports: “She said she was told he had to wear bandages around his chest because of his heart monitor and a swimming costume for his circulation.” She says she discovered the unfortunate truth in June 2013, when she and Kye were having sex for the last time:
She told police that she felt something was ‘not right’ so she removed the scarf and mask, and saw Newland standing there wearing a woolly hat, swimming suit and prosthetic penis. The alleged victim said in court that she was “probably a bit stupid,” continuing: “If I thought Kye was a girl, whether it was Gayle or anyone else, I would not have continued seeing him.”
She claims that she did not knowingly consent to the use of a prosthesis, and she did not know Kye was a woman. Newland, however, denies the charges, claiming that the alleged victim knew she was a woman and that “Kye” was a shared fantasy.
Newland’s lawyer characterized the alleged victim’s claims that Kye’s high-pitched voice was due to his half-Filipino and half-Latino heritage as a “lazy stereotype” and a “ridiculous excuse.”
Live updates from this completely insane ongoing trial, apparently being referred to as the “Chester Prosthetic Penis Trial,” can be found here.
How did she even consent to sex without ever seeing the person? I don't believe it.
Maybe she saw "Kye" fully dressed but then when it came to the sex part that is when the blindfold came on.
So maybe she thought Kye looked kind of feminine but thinks Filipino men look feminine? All kinds of crazy from that.
Although NOW I'm thinking of that Bruce Willis movie - straight to cable probably - Color Of Night. He is a shrink who fills in doing group therapy for his friend's practice after his friend was murdered. Spoiler alert
Bruce Willis accidentally gets in an accident with a beautiful young thing and starts an affair with her. He can't see red because of some trauma as a kid and she plays up the red a lot - but he can't see it (double messaging maybe?)... anyway the young woman turns out to be this teenaged "boy" in the group therapy session and that boy had been having affairs using different personas with everyone in the group. He was Bonnie to a couple of them, went by another name with another, but was a boy in the session. The patient had DID after suffering from abuse and sexual assault by her older brother who forced her to present herself to the public as a boy.
It took almost the whole movie for Bruce Willis's character to realize the boy in his group therapy session was the girl he had been f-ing in his dead friend's house.
