I have seen many posts about Malala on FB recently. What do you think about
1) the picture with her on one side and Kylie Jenner on the other, with a paragraph contrasting Malala's achievements and unadorned face with Kylie's overly madeup face and lack of achievements?
2) the posts and articles about how Malala will have to take the SAT to get into Stanford? I guess the assumption is that she should automatically make it in based on the peace prize and the education work?
I really like Malala, but I feel like she should take the SAT to show educational merit just like any other person. They wouldn't have to use it as the deciding factor. You can't tell me that the SAT is the be-all, end-all.
I don't see why #1 matters. I mean, you can compare all sorts of people, but I don't see how a Malala/Kylie comparison is relevant.
For #2, I think it's a bit silly, but that's how these things work. For my grad program, even if you had a place in a lab and the professor wasn't going to look at GRE scores, you still had to take the actual test. If it's a requirement, it's a requirement.
I'm not sure why people think it's okay to compare Caitlyn to anyone. It makes no sense.
Malala discussed having to take exams when she was on the Daily Show a while ago. I don't see why she wouldn't take the SAT. Who is saying she isn't?
No one is saying she isn't. There was just a news article recently saying that she wants to go to Stanford, which means she has to take the SAT (although I wonder if she can take the TOEFL). Anyway, so now everyone on social media is saying omg, why should she have to take the SAT she's a nobel prize winner.
Malala's fight started around education for girls and women. And she's brilliant. I think she'll take the SAT and crush it for personal, symbolic, and administrative reasons.

I'm going to ASSume Malala will actually want to take the SATs for at least symbolic reasons. She might just want to be treated like any other student.
Are international students required to take the SATs? I don't remember my friends saying anything about it but I doubt Malala will tank the SATs.
You can typically take the TOEFL. At least that's the information I've gotten from my friends coming to university here and the little bit of research I did on it previously.
I'm sure Malala will do fine on her SAT and I'm sure that even if she didn't do well, Stanford is not going to reject her for it. And there are plenty of other universities that would jump at the chance to have her as a student.

Sure, if candidates take the test, then she takes the test. Malala likes tests; she said so in her memoir. She is competitive about them.
I don't mind the Kylie thing. I think it's more a commentary on how vapid and spoiled and apathetic American kids are. I howled with laughter when Jezebel took segments of Bristol Palin's memoir and put them side-by-side with Malala's.
What I saw of the Malala/Kylie thing was that they are both 18 and Malala isn't getting nearly as many "breaking news! Malala is 18!" compared to Kylie's front page People magazine and TMZ lead stories. The message is that we worship the wrong people for the wrong reasons.
NewOrleans - Bristol Palin and Malala? I missed that. I want to go find it now because that sounds totally read-worthy.
Whether Malala takes the SAT or not, she would be an asset to any school. Every school would be fighting to get her because the publicity for being "Malala's alma mater" is worth more than money can buy. With her education, intelligence and drive, it should be a walk in the park for her to score well. Even if she imploded, she is Malala and an asset to almost any program.

TOEFL is for English, not knowledge of subjects. If you're from a country where English isn't the official language, you probably have to take it IN ADDITION to other tests.
Oh yeah, duh! I was helping a friend apply for community college here, so I guess that's why it said it required the TOEFL for international students and didn't mention the SAT. Obviously the SAT would be required for a 4 year university.

I love Malala. We read articles and watched videoclips of her interviews last year, and I plan on doing so this year, too. There was a Davis Guggenheim documentary about Malala that premiered at Telluride; it looks really good and will be released in October.
