You walk into a tiny guest half bathroom, and instead of there being a towel rack with a single towel, there is an open-topped basket on the top of the toilet tank that is full of hand towels. The expectation is that you will take a towel and then put it in a designated trash can that is for dirty towels, rather than trash. The debate surrounds the proximity of the towels to the toilet. The bathroom is VERY tiny, so even a towel on a towel rack will honestly be just as close to the toilet as the basket on the back of the toilet tank. For those on mobile, the question is, "Is the towel basket on the back of the toilet grosser than a towel rack 1 foot from the toilet?" Yes or no.
ETA: Thank you in advance for helping me with this! I know it sounds ridiculous, but it's become a rather hotly debated point in my home!

My SIL has the same set up in her guest bathroom (except they're fancy paper towels, not cloth). I never thought it was gross. Her guest bathroom is reserved for guests, though, and it's always very clean.

This is what I was telling H. He thinks it's gross to have a towel "on the toilet." I say that the towel isn't on the toilet, it's on a basket. He says it doesn't matter.
is that metallic wallpaper? it is my life goal to have gold wallpaper in a bathroom.
DH's grandparents have gold metallic wallpaper with fuzzy pink roses in their guest bathroom. I love it! The roses near the toilet are all worn away from decades (no doubt) of people rubbing them. Which IS kind of gross, now that I think about that!

If that house stays in the family and you one day in the future find yourself scraping that wallpaper off, wear a mask. I'm telling you from recent experience of my grandparent's old house with the fuzzy wallpaper. That shit flies around in clouds and it hurts to inhale.
