I recently bought my first eyeliner (UD 24/7 pencil). The SA at Sephora tried to teach me how to apply it, but I am lost now that I'm on my own. She applied the eyeliner with my eyes closed. When I close my eyes, the eyeliner looks like a two-year-old applied it! How should I be doing this?
I just watched the Tiffany D tutorial, and I am totally grossed out by watching her line her waterline. +o(
Stay away from the waterline for now. Make sure the pencil is very sharp, and rest the elbow of your applicator hand on something while you're applying to steady your hand. I start in the middle of my eyelid, drawing a line to the outer corner first, and then go back and do the inner half.
And cut yourself some slack--applying eyeliner is a skill that takes a bit of practice. Keep some makeup remover wipes handy for mistakes and you'll be fine.
I can't apply eyeliner like TiffanyD or the others - I still have to do the more "basic" method, in which I do small almost dot strokes to create the line. If I do a line just straight, well, its not a line lol. If I do smaller lines/strokes, I can connect them to make a solid looking and straight(er) line.
In theory, you're suppose to be able to do this and graudate to the solid line drawing. I am not there yet.

This is very helpful! Thank you!
And I don't think I can sharpen the UD 24/7 pencil??
UD makes a pencil sharpener for them. Tarte makes an eyeliner called Empas"eyes" that is made for tightlining. I also find that the chubby cream shadow sticks from UD in the darker colors work well, because they sort of pre-smudge for you.

An eyeliner sharpener will work. UD has one, as does sephora (which may be a little cheaper? I am not sure. I have the Sephora Professional sharpener which I use more than my UD one honestly). I know its sort of plastic looking, but you kind of just treat it like a wood pencil.

What a revelation! So there's more liner besides the tip that is sticking out? I am hopeless!
Is this a special type of eye pencil sharpener? I have a Clinique sharpener, but it looks just like a manual pencil sharpener.
I will second leaning your elbow on something. I have a make-up mirror but when I apply eyeliner, I lean across the bathroom counter and use my regular bathroom mirror. This is mainly to rest my elbow on the counter and hold my upper body steady.
Applying eyeliner is just one of those things that gets better with practice. I'm not sure what color eyeliner you're using but I started out using light grey and light brown until I got better at it.
Also, do you have a smudger? If you mess up a lot in the beginning then you can just smudge the line a little bit to make more of a 'smokey' look.

Nope, not special, clinique should work fine! My sephora pro one gets a better point I find, but that's not always necessary.
