My boyfriend and I are both huge Star Wars fans. We both live in Norway, but in different cities that are a 45-minute flight apart. We have been to London together in the past.
The question:
DBF has gotten it into his head that since there is no IMAX cinema in Norway, we should both fly to London (a 2-hr flight) to see Episode VII when it comes out. After being terribly disappointed by the re-releases and Eps. I-III, I do not want to invest the time and effort into a trip to see a movie that I'm terrified might suck. While I agree with DBF that it would be nice to see the film on a big screen, there is a 1000-seat cinema right here in Oslo. In fact, it's the largest THX cinema in the world. I think he should just come here for a weekend to watch the film together.
DBF argues that we should go for IMAX because it has better resolution. I argue that I've never really noticed the difference, and it seems appropriate to watch a Star Wars film in a THX cinema.

How much money are we talking about? If you have to fly to see each other anyway, planning the London trip might not be so bad. If it's just about the film, though, I would be tempted to see it nearby and then if you love it plan the trip to see it in IMAX. But I find IMAX to be not that big an incentive...I think sometimes the screen is so big you kind of miss seeing the whole picture.
Pricing out the trip to London, it looks like it would be around $775 (excluding meals): My plane ticket - $250, his plane ticket - $225, 2 nights hotel - $300
The ticket for him to come here would be around $175.
I would not pay that much to see it at an IMAX theater. I would camp out for tickets (if that was still a thing) and pull my 8 year old out of school for the day (which I am totally doing) to see it at a regular theater.
