I feel like a terrible dog mom for semi ignoring this for a while. He always had has skin issues so we just bath him often and I try and make sure its not infected. Well this time around it just wouldn't get any better.
We went to the vet today. He has a secondary infection from his allergies and the fact that he is a lick addict. He's now on an antibiotic for 14 days. Benadryl twice a day for 14 days, and a medicated shampoo every 2 days for 14 days. They are hoping that all of this works and that he clears up soon. Otherwise we have to test for more environmental/food allergies. Also we are changing his flea medication to Revolution because its suppose to treat and prevent mites which could be part of the problem.
Ugh I wish I would have taken him sooner. I'm so glad we went today and that the vet reassured me that we are doing fine and we will get this figured out.
Don't worry! My friend has a German shepard that spent a lot of time half naked until they could figure out what the allergies were. O licks a lot as well but not to the point of irritation. I hope he gets better. Poor baby.
I feel your pain, my poor dog suffers terribly from hot spots every summer. And him being a bichon he needs daily brushing. Well, since EJ was born we got distracted and didn't brush him daily - maybe once a week and he suffered for it. We had to shave him down and put a cone on him to get him to leave his hot spots alone. He's healing, his fur is growing back, and he is starting to act like his old self again. Dog parent guilt has been abundant but thankfully he is a forgiving creature.
ETA: We're also giving him benadryl twice a day; something we knew we should've done at the first sign of hot spot. Bad bad bad. :::hangs head:::
Our husky gets awful hot spots that she itches and makes raw and ugly. We took her to the vet last week for routine shots, and had them look at her current spot. They had to shave the area on her back just in front of the tail to open it up to the air for healing. She looked so pitiful with the bald spot. Its finally not looking so bad and the hair is beginning to grow back.
