We don't CD, so I bought 2 regular swim diapers - one Charlie Banana from Target and one Tuga from Amazon. I like them both, but as we haven't had to test if it'll keep poo in, can't comment on that yet. We have a pool and take weekly lessons, so I thought having 2 was a good idea.
Two should be plenty, remember, they are only there to catch the poop.
I prefer actual swim diapers over pockets because they aren't as roomy in the crotch since they aren't meant to be stuffed. When I use his pockets, he has a lot of sagging that looks uncomfortable and funny.
I prefer Bummi's swim diapers. The iplay were okay for us, but do seem to run a bit small and have some unnecessary padding (which just means he drips for longer after we get out).
We have a speedo brand swim diaper from Target. He hasn't pooped in it yet so I can't comment on that. We've also used disposable Huggies swim diapers. DH and MIL both learned the hard way that swim diapers don't catch pee!

I have two. An iplay and an imse vimse. I prefer the imse vimse. One of the snaps on my iplay never work, plus it doesn't feel anywhere as nice as the imse vimse. Fortunately, neither have been pooped in, but I trust they both work.
We have imse vimse. I only have one- I'd just rinse and line dry outside and it would be fine for the next day. However, DD has never pooped in the pool, so no clue if it actually holds anything in. lol.
We used to use pocket diapers too, but then I read the chlorine breaks down the elastic, so I stopped.
Also, I heard you can use a regular pocket CD without the insert, has anyone tried this?
I use a Bummis cover (velcro closure). It even has frogs on it, so looks like a swim diaper. I have a bunch because we used prefolds and covers for the first 3-4 month before using pockets. I can't imagine that an unstuffed pocket would be much different. The whole point is to contain poo.

This! I love Bummis and we do have an iPlay diaper, but it absorbs a crap ton of water. There is no reason to have all that absorbency.
I just have 2 diapers right now. DD has never, ever pooped while swimming for whatever reason.

If you're swimming in fresh water, using a pocket cover should be fine. You shouldn't use a cover if you're in chlorine because it wreaks havoc on the PUL.
