My ex-banker H (though himself also outraged at VW) finds all the VW outrage interesting because banks.
Yeah, the outrage here is interesting. What they did was awful, but it seems like pretty run of the mill corporate shenanigans, and no worse than bank fuckery. And then there's GM. That nobody from GM is in prison for covering up the ignition switch defect makes me wild.

For me, and for a lot of people I know, it's because of the environment. They purposefully bought these cars because of the low emissions, and they were lied to.
Given how poorly VWs are reviewed in Consumer Reports I never understand why people buy them in the first place.
Oh, we got the beetle because it's cute. And available in stick. It was a few months before our wedding, Hs car died and I had been in love with beetles since preschool, so he went out and bought one for me and then drove my civic. Basically, it was a romantic gesture. It's 9.5 years old and has 110K miles and so far (*knocks wood*) has needed no major work. The one expensive repair was because someone went up and down our street in Harlem breaking everyone's side view mirrors off one night, but that's not VWs fault.

This makes me sad and so angry! I flove my Passat and would drive VWs forever, but this will likely keep me from buying a second one in a few years when our older car dies.

We got ours due to environmental reasons, it's a diesel, it is a stick, and it gets decent gas mileage for the amount of driving we do (45-50 mpg). DH drives 230 miles each day he works (3/week).
We've had the car since 2010 when we bought it brand new. It has been an excellent car.
I've one my TDI for 3.5 months. I am so pissed at VW right now. I wanted to drive it back to the dealer on Friday.
I had a TDI on order back in 2009, but after 6 months, VW still hadn't shipped it. I got pissed at them then and finally forgave them. Now this.
My 100 mile r/t commute with NPR on the whole time is not helping my pissed level. 3 or 4 times per hour, making me run through all the emotions. Pissed. Guilt. Gullible. Angry. Rage. Guilt.
(Oh, and j think this is a lot easier for people to wrap their heads around than he bank fraud stuff. Less math)

I find it really interesting because it means it was easier for them to plan, engineer, and implement this system and keep the whole thing quiet instead of just making the system run cleaner. I think it speaks a lot to the complex nature of how dependent the industry is on fossil fuels and how hard it is to enable change or even just progress.

My first car was a used Jetta and I loved that car so much. I drove it for ten years and never had any problems with it. I was even involved in a pretty serious crash on the interstate and that baby kept me safe. It probably should have been totaled but somehow I managed to keep it.
I have one of the new Jettas now, though, and it's not nearly as good as the old one. I kind of wish I had gotten something else instead.

Two weeks ago my mom's jetta was rear ended and totalled. She was devastated and loved that car. She just got a good appraisal from the insurance company a few days ago. Now we're like, that was good luck!
