Over the past year, I have had many different hair looks...I love changing it up, and in the process, I went from super dark brown hair that I sported for years, to light blonde hair because I wanted to get back to a more "natural" shade for me. Turns out, I hated being blonde, lol. So then I went pink, and purple...Anyways. Colorwise, I don't hate right now.
But because of the lightening, my ends were dead dead, so I cut my hair quite a bit a little over 2 months ago to get rid of the dry deadness and work on getting back my pretty, longer hair. I figured, it's just hair, it will grow back, yadda yadda...but I still hate the length. I feel so blah with it. I can do an awesome face of make-up, but then as soon I as start on my hair, I feel not as pretty.
So, any tips? I have tried different styles, but part of the issue is that my hair isn't really holding anything anymore. And it isn't really long enough to pull back.

I've had many unfortunate haircuts. One kind of resembled Johnny Depp's portrayal of Willie Wonka. When that happened I super increased my intake of Biotin and Viviscal so my hair would grow as fast as possible.
In terms of styling I would usually do a deep part on one side and kind of clip it back with bobby pins. I'll try to find pictures.
R This is my go to style if I'm trying to look pretty...but it's falls flat really quickly.
It usually ends up looking like this...
Just a blah of fuzzy hair. I tried to take a picture of my hair today...but I have no room on my phone, even after deleting a ton of photos. Stupid iPhone.
I have always really hated my naturally curly hair and straightened it 6-7 days a week for the last 15 years. Since moving to FL with the heat (sweat), rain, and humidity my hair does not stay straight for long and hold the polished look I always liked, plus I wanted to die every day it rained and I got caught without an umbrella because I would look horrible after. I started embracing my naturally curly hair because even with all those elements it will still look good after. It has been an adjustment to like the way it looks, but it has been such a relief and time saver. Can you embrace your natural texture more, are there other products you can use to help it hold the curl?
I also second the viviscal that pantsoffdanceoff recommended. She has amazing hair and I started taking it for my damaged ends at her recommendation and it has helped it look healthier and grow much faster! Moroccan oil on the ends has also been a life saver in minimizing the damage too.

Do you have any favorite brands or things that I should be looking for when I purchase them?

I have no advice, but I feel ya. When I first cut all my hair off, I LOVED it. Then, I HATED it. Getting ready to go out, I just wanted to put it up and not look at it, but it was too short. I couldn't curl it, I couldn't really straighten it. It just was there. It is now down past my collar bone and I am feeling okay about it again. I still miss my length. I want it long again.
I had a similar hair situation - lost a lot of length due to over processing and was pretty unhappy with the result.
I relied on pulling it half back and that was a good compromise, style-wise. I could create volume at the roots, and it stayed put moreso than if I left it down.
I used It's a 10 leave-in spray, which really helped with dryness and overall manageability. And I had my stylist give me Olaplex treatments, which really are a gift from God. If your salon doesn't do them, find one that does.
I'm happy to report that while my hair isn't as long as I would like, it's growing and looking much better than it did in the winter. I hate being patient.

I need to take the plunge and do the same, my hair is all uneven from breakage especially in the front, it makes me feel so..ugly . Im scared to cut off what little length in the back i actually do have because i put it up a lot into a messy bun which makes me feel ok. I went from bleach blonde, to dark brown, then bleached highlights then full bleach, then balayage... Havent colored now in 8 months to try to help it be healthy.
Hopefully in 2 months or so the front will be long enough to cut into a bob.
I have been using the macadamja hair shampoo and deep conditioner, i do think it helps with keeping it soft/not breaking off as badly.
My hair is naturally curly so it's difficult for me to grow my hair long because my end split and get dry. I take the vitamins below and they work wonders! They are yummy too and are buy one get one free! My hair has grown so much over the last 2-3 months.

I feel like I'm at pretty good place with my hair (I've had some very rough moments). My hair is kind of my security blanket. Here are some suggestions of what I do to kind of keep it from getting damaged.
1) buy scrunchies. They aren't cute, but I feel like they put less pressure on my hair.
2)I limit how often I pull my hair into a tight ponytail. I read somewhere that constant pulling on your hair is not good for your hair. However, when I need to put my hair up I either use a scrunchie, clip or goody spin pin
3) Viviscal and Biotin
4) I sleep with my hair in a loose bun on top of my head to limit knotting
5) I limit heat styling but when I do use heat I use a heat protectant
For the frizz I reccomend a kertain treatment or brazillian blowout. Both of those really gave my hair amazing shine and I didn't notice it take away abiility to hold curl.
I did a chop on my hair last February. I hated it but it was totally necessary. I take prenatal supplements and have noticed that my hair grew back really healthy and quickly. I also went for regular trims this time. I use a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, which also seems to help. Humidity is a killer on my hair and I haven't found the best product yet, but I like a dab of the Moroccan oil.
How often do you wash it? (Shampoo?) I notice that the less I wash (I'm down to once a week), the better it holds style. Now I've gotten to the point where I wash it at night when I do wash because it's so soft that I can't get it to do anything. I am at about the length you are - I usually pull up the stuff out of my face either to the side or the middle of my head. I can't make it into a pony tail quite yet.

I ruined my hair a few years back when I went lighter and I was using a blow dryer. My hair was awful. I decided to get a bob cut which is very short for me and ditched the dryer. What I do is that I will wash y hair on Sundays and let it air dry and flat iron it on Sunday evenings or Monday mornings. Then on Wednesday, I wash it at night and flat iron it on Thursday morning.
I also went back to my natural hair color and it looks much much healthier now.

I have naturally wavy and fine hair that is really sensitive to products. It does really well when highlighted so I do that a lot. My natural color is mousy but colors really easily. My stylist switched to organic color in the last few years. I don't know if that's necessary but I do think it is better for my hair.
I order French shampoo/conditioners usually online though I've actually found that Kerastase is now carried in some drug stores in my area. I use either L'Oreal Professionnel or Kerastase (I keep a stash of both). The Kerastase conditioner is expensive as hell but a little goes a long way. It's the best conditioner that I've experienced so far.
Anyway, experimenting with conditioners or even using a leave-in conditioner once or twice a week might help you.
