If your child understands the nuances of Nathan Fillion coming out of Miss Piggy's trailer tucking in his shirt, hopefully they're older than five.
Are you all forgetting the racy things watched and approved for kids in the 80's? If you were too young for the sex jokes...they probably went over your head anyway.
That's not to say you shouldn't check out the show before letting your kids watch, you absolutely should. But if you're agreeing with OMM, it may be time to check yourself.
I always snuck out of my room to watch Dallas. And I started watching Y&R and other soaps earlier than I even remember.
I base what my kids can watch on them, though. There are plenty of things that I think they can watch but I'm also strict about other things. But it isn't based on ratings. It's based on what I know they can or can't handle or what bothers them.
We took Scarlett to see it last year when it came out - she had just turned four. I didn't even know that was judge worthy but we also took her and Jackson to see Avengers in May when she was 4.5.
I thought Big Hero 6 was good. Both kids love it.
ITS NOT JUDGEWORTHY!!!
Geeze.
I was responding to Josie's bad mom comment! I didn't think anyone else said it was judge worthy.

lol. Here, I'll tag myself for you, since it was apparently too much effort to call me out directly. toledo
? My post was not directed just at you, it was to all the pearl clutchers in this thread. Which is why I posted it in the thread. A response to the discussion.
The 8 pm hour is traditionally considered a safe time for family programing.
The new Muppet Show is not for kids. And it's going to be on at 8.
It's not hard to see why some people are upset. And honestly this happens anytime a not for kid show moves into the 8 pm hour. This is not new outrage.
The Muppets was a kid/family friendly show. The 8 pm hour is traditionally considered a safe time for family programing.

This isn't something I was aware of. I thought that anything that came on after 8pm was for the grown folks (Sprout excepted). My bullshit procedural police shows start at 8pm. That's also the time Cartoon Network switches over to Adult Swim. In my head 8pm = start of adult television.
Bad mom here lets her 4 year olds watch Big Hero 6.
Yep, me too. A lot of the dark stuff goes over her head. When she asks what happened, we keep it simple.
I feel like a lot of adults have selective memory when it comes to these things. Looney Tunes has a ton of adult humor, yet (most) people have no issues with letting their kids watch. Honestly, if kids are too young for the jokes or concepts, they'll go flying right over their heads.
Really, it's the middle schoolers you gotta watch out for.

8 pm has always been prime time. I remember watching plenty of sitcoms at that time with racy jokes that went over my head when I was a kid. I agree that the muppets are a bit of a different situation, but I don't think the time slot itself is anything to freak out over.
Yes 8 pm is prime time yes. And yes people freak out routinely on what gets shown at 8 pm. The darker fare generally gets shoved into a later time slot. But not always.
In fact! It used to be the law in the US that the 8 pm hour be for family viewing TV. That law was declared unconstitutional but some networks still voluntarily go along with the concept. That's why you have all this public push back about what gets shown at 8.
This also makes me think of how little "family" shows there are anymore.
There is not one sitcom type show you can really watch with your family these days. Or, at least with younger kids. Remember how big TGIF was? Grant it, I'm sure if I went back I might clutch my pearls a little tighter watching from a parent's perspective vs. a child's but you catch my drift.
Do you remember how many women Uncle Jesse brought around on Full House? Sure, they were just dating but as an adult it's obvious they meant dating.

Didn't we all see that sleep chart floating around a few weeks ago. It's moot if 8:00 pm shows are kid-friendly or not, all kids must be in bed by that time anyway

The chase scene with the guy in the mask initially weirded them out, but ultimately they loved it. When I got my new pillows they kept making references to the "spooning a warm marshmallow" line.

Agree.
Looney Toons definitely had adult humor and pop-culture and political jokes and that young kids wouldn't have been able to understand. I watched The Simpsons when it first came on TV (which was a cartoon and could appeal to kids) and I think I was about 7 when it began. I'd watch with my older siblings and sometimes my parents. I'm not sure if it was at the 8PM time slot though.
I watched so many shows and movies with adult themes or some adult humor and it all went over my head. I focused on what I could understand and never noticed the rest.
It was and still is, in the 8pm time slot. For the longest time it was The Simpsons, something, X-Files.
My daughter isn't stupid, either. I tried to put on an episode of the Simpsons (FX) while she was up once and she looked at me and said "this is a grown up cartoon. I want a kid's show."

Ah, thanks. All of these shows and their times slots mush together for me now.
Hahaha. Your girl's no fool. "Don't try to bore me into going to bed, mom."
It was a good one, too! The See My Vest episode.
I thought for sure the song would win it for me. NOPE.
Honestly my kids are in bed at 8 and I can't think of one thing in prime time I would let them watch anyway.
This. And we've had Mythbusters on only to be entertained by commercials about erectile dysfunction. So there's no real safe zone other than to DVR and try to watch ahead.
Also: Big Hero 6 may be dark. So is just about every other Disney movie EVER. At least one dead parent, usually at least one villain trying to kill at least one hero. None of that is dark or too dark?

Sorry, I can't get behind this boycott. It's the Muppets, not Avenue Q. The so called "interspecies relationship" has been around since the inception of the show. And although it's hid adult humor around, I highly doubt on ABC, The Muppets are going to be covering sex and drugs and promoting sin.
The only sin being promoted in the show is Kermit's New Girlfriend.

Okay.
Really, if you don't want your small child seeing kids' movies that have "dark moments" in them, then stay away from Pixar movies. Full stop.
The Learning Channel had a show featuring a vaginal clown car and incestuous bible-thumpers. I think TV has jumped the shark as far as what is or isn't standard family fare.
