We're actually relieved. H had been unconscious and unresponsive for days. It was a relief to hear he was out of pain. H is back home which is fantastic for me. Single parenting sucks. Now there's a big issue of what to do with FIL's dog. She's 13 and doesn't get along with children or other pets. Putting her down or in a shelter are out of the question. This dog kept FIL alive for years. He loved her so much. Oh well, we'll figure something out. And sorting out the estate with take at least a year I understand. Which he had a will so no idea why. Anyway that's my update.
Hugs D. I'm glad he's out of pain, but it doesn't make it much easier.
Even with a will and an estate plan, it took 8 months for my dad to settle my grandma's estate. All her accounts had to be located, beneficiaries identified and paid out, and just going through personal effects took some time.
So much love to you, D. I totally understand the feeling of relief despite the sadness.
Feel free to vent or ask advice as you deal with the estate. MIL was extremely organized and had a trust, will, etc. all set up and it still took us a year or more to get everything settled. It's harder if no one is local to where your FIL lived. I encourage you, as much as possible, to throw money at the problem to get it all settled cleanly and quickly (lean on the estate attorney). Hopefully FIL's estate can help cover some of this cost.
Good luck with the dog, too. What a tough situation. Where is she now?
She's still living at FIL's house in FL. My SIL is down there for a bit and she's caring for the dog.
Yeah the estate stuff sounds complicated. Luckily H's sister is executer and not him.
