I just looked this up - apparently stores can make up whatever policy they want and some do indeed require in-state ID/licenses due to the way cashiers can be held criminally liable for selling to minors: www.tabc.state.tx.us/enforcement/age_verification.asp Sigh.
The whole town is like a crazy high school clique I am just not a part of. I regularly enhance my (now VERY subtle) SC southern accent just so I don't stick out QUITE so far.
For some reason I thought you were in the Dallas suburbs, but this just sounds like straight-up small town crazy. Yuck. I am sorry.

DH tells me that at TD Garden (in Boston) you can't buy alcohol with an out of state ID unless you're over 40. I know at the Costco in Danvers, they have a sign on their alcohol cage that you can't buy booze unless you have a Mass ID or a passport (although my 40 year old DH has never been carded, so I guess he looks his age). But these are store policies, not MA law.

Lame. Once the liquor store wouldn't take DHs passport, then wouldn't sell to me because she said she knew I would share it with him. They are now out of business, shocker!
Yeah I'm not gonna lie, you live in an interesting place. We had a branch there at my last job and regularly said "what the hell is in the water there??"
When I went to get my TX drivers license they wouldnt accept my KS DL as a government issued ID. I had to come back with my passport.

Typical Texas bs
I once went in to a liquor store with my husband without my ID. I was not buying anything and this crazy cashier goes off on me and tells me I must have a ID to enter facility. I was like I am not buying anything and I assure you I am old (30)...she insisted I go get my license or she wasn't going to sell my husband liquor. I was pissed. Worst service ever.
