If so, did you recently get the letter about pulling your funds? What's your plan?
We're enrolling in November. Dad opened a 529 when V was born and put some money in there, the savings have been going there so far.
Is this the whole thing where GETs have been a bad investment for the last 2-3 years because college tuition has been frozen, and so they're giving people a chance to pull the money out and put it somewhere else? If I had funds ... I dunno, I don't think I'd pull them with little kids, I'm sure the tuition hikes will come back before 2021.
If I had a teenager I would try to roll them over into another state's 529 that had a good low-fee bond fund (not sure which states have the good 529 programs these days, I think Utah was tops when I looked a few years ago.
Honestly, I don't even know. I skimmed the letter in a daze Wednesday night after a really long day. Something about a law passed a few years ago. I figured, since the kids were so young, we'd leave the money. I should probably look more into it.
possibly to the first but no to the second. People don't WFH much at all here compared to my last two jobs. We do have development offices in London, Austin TX, and (soon) Vancouver BC, if any of those are closer.
Yeah I think the "clothes" number in the spreadsheet is way low.
In my current job I work mostly in C++ and python. I've spent a lot of time working with Java and Perl in the past. I think C++ programming is becoming more of a (lucrative) niche these days -- lots of schools teach in Java now for good reasons.
My product is C++ in a Java platform. It's hard to find good C++ people.
I am shocked you're one of the high earners. You take the bus (or subway or something) like Joe Schmuck. I'm all discombobulated now.
Traffic downtown is beyond miserable and parking is about $300/month, but most large companies give you a free bus pass. I would rather sit on a bus and GBCN than sit in stop & go traffic. The public transit system here is good by American standards, lots of people take the bus. I did give up on it right before I changed jobs, but if I had been working normal hours instead of busting my butt to finish my projects I probably would have stuck with it. Also I am just a big believer in public transit, so I really tried to make it work for as long as possible.
I work and live north of downtown now, so I stay out of the traffic, but parking is still expensive (about $200/month). So I bike to work, which cuts both ways: cheap, but still somehow kinda snobby?
It was really fun to take V to daycare on the bus. He had a lot of fun and charmed everyone.

So, summary - move to Detroit.
I could get a job fixing all of the emissions test defeat devices!
... too soon?
(yes, I know it was VW that got caught and they're based on Germany, but I think the thinking is other companies may also be cheating and they just happened to be the ones who were caught)
I feel like I need to say that chris was a SAHD when none of our friends had kids and we were brand new parents and I would tell him "oh well, my internet friends said this or that" and then one thing led to another and...then he got a job when dd1 was 15 months old. He doesn't read anymore (usually) unless tagged.

Ah no, we are East Coast. What about you @sessalee?

He also knits, so, I mean, how creepy can he be?
... on second thought, nobody answer that.
I'm jealous. He should join the knitting and crocheting ladies of our local Women's Club. We don't discriminate. If you learn to knit, you can join too. I think you'd be doing a reverse commute and there's plenty of need for Linus blankets.
niq I think it's brave of you to post. I'm always interested in learning how people spend their money.
mofongo, speaking of SAH -- how have you been liking it?
Well, today sucks b/c I'm cleaning, but I am loving it! We were out of town every other week, for long weekends until this week, so it was a bit scattered. I'm getting into a routine now, we will see...
I have called all of our service providers and got money off on just about every bill, so that was good:)
I started a book club, lol.
You?
nice!
I started off pretty balanced. got up with my H every morning and walked him to the train, then I'd treat myself to breakfast and coffee at a cute shop or central park. I made sure to work on the apartment a bit (lots of unpacking and decorating) and professional development (job hunting, networking, reading articles) and, at the peak of my self-indulgence, started a blog.
then winnie (our adopted pup) came. I love her, but she's a handful and is having major adjustment issues (including a phobia of the outdoors) so 95% of my days have been working with her/her behaviorists/vet. she actually is sick for the first time today and the panic was real, lol. I may have texted my vet pictures of her poop... unsolicited.
I go back to work PT (4 days/week) on Wednesday and think it's for the best.

I really wish I had gone into software development. My degree is in electrical engineering and I work in manufacturing. I have basically no experience in software, except I can read it and usually understand what is going on. I do write PLC and Labview code, and I can program robots (lol).
How would you recommend I break into programming? My company will pay for continuing education, but I don't have much time. I don't live in a tech corridor - I'm in the Midwest, so heavy on manufacturing.

I said Detroit, we're american auto makers here, and enjoying total schadenfreude over the VW thing. SO FUNNY.
Ford's diesels don't claim to be clean diesels and the numbers are in line with what makes sense in terms of emissions. Can't speak for GM.

What's his skill set? We have offices all over, namely Durham NC and Caimbridge MA on the east coast but do have WFH capabilities. Message me

Austin? Hmm, maybe I should look for a new job - I don't make nearly what you do without the RSUs and I'm a software engineer. I'd have to learn C++ though. If you don't mind, would you PM me the company? I've poked around a little for jobs here and most places don't seem to pay very well.

Software engineers around here don't make nearly that much either - most I know are in the 80-90k range, which is what I already make...I just think I'd enjoy writing code more than I enjoy my current job.
