If it is a fossil or organism, what does that mean in regards to the great filter? I'm thinking of the article posted here (I think) a few months ago about why we haven't found life on other planets, or why aliens haven't contacted us. I can't remember the specifics of the article now...

Hey CEP! I don't post over here much - I'm mostly on H&F - but I like to jump in when I feel like I can possibly contribute something that makes sense. I love CEP, and rely on it for the main part of feeling like I know what's going on in the world. Thanks for that!
Anyway, I'm a Ph.D. student in Geology, and I work for NASA - I study volcanoes on Mars and do experimental geochemistry, so this is totally my jam. Based on the people who are involved in this press conference, and what they have worked on in the past/are currently working on, many of us think that HiRISE (hence having Al McEwen as part of the panel) has gotten some excellent imagery of the recurring slope lineae (RSL) sites, and these images strongly support that RSLs are formed by flowing water emerging from the subsurface. Ojha (another panel member - and a very suspicious one at that, since us lowly grad students are basically NEVER involved in major NASA press conferences) has worked on the formation of RSL sites through water (brine) flow in the past, and supposedly was working on that for his grad research as well.
