As Pope Francis left the chamber after addressing Congress yesterday, legislators crowded around him, hoping to get a moment with the leader of the Catholic Church. But one man wasn't among them. That's because Rep. Bob Brady of Philadelphia was too busy swiping the pope's water glass, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. Brady was spotted carefully using two fingers to lift the pope's glass from the podium and carry it back to his office, where he, his wife, and two staffers sipped from it. "How many people do you know that drank out of the same glass as the pope?" Brady asks the Daily News.
After letting another congressman and his family dip their fingers in the glass, Brady put the remaining water into a bottle to use to bless his grandchildren later. "The congressman is a Catholic and has immense respect for the Holy Father,” his chief of staff tells ABC News. If the phrase "thou shalt not steal" is running through your head, don't worry: Brady tells the Washington Post he's asked the appropriate House officials for a bill so he can pay for the glass. It will eventually go in a cabinet in his home—next to the water glass used by President Obama at his 2008 inauguration. He swiped that one, too.

I read another account where the guy insists it's "holy water" even if the Pope didn't bless it because "everything the Pope touches is blessed" or words to that effect. He said nothing would change his mind and he was super excited to get that glass of water. If I recall correctly, he was going to have it authenticated somehow, too.
It's kind of nutty, okay a lot nutty, but kind of cute.
Am I the only one who thinks it seems somehow disrespectful? I'm not even sure I know why; it just seems like that to me.
Of course it's disrespectful. It's also weird as hell. I'm seeing comments all over the internet that "this is his religion" and the rest of us just wouldn't understand. All I can say is that if any of the Catholics in my family did something like this, I'd pretend not to know them.
I would argue that the mere fact that the water was left on the podium indicates there was nothing special about it. The pope doesn't leave holy water just laying around. If it were really holy, there would be someone assigned to canting it and placing it in a tabernacle.
In his effort to prove that he is a better chatholic than the rest of us, this guy is just showing his ignorance. And making up his own rules is extremely disrespectful to the church he is trying to prove his love of.

Yes, definitely disrespectful! It would creep me out to think that someone stole my drink and drank from it and whatnot. What a weird way to get a "blessing" - stealing one!
