So Zendaya is a biracial Disney actress/singer from the Oakland area. (At first I was getting Zendaya confused with an old American Idol contestant). Barbie made a special edition barbie based on Zendaya's red carpet look. She has locks!

Kiddo (she is insisting on Kiddo, tyvm) didn't get it at first. I explained to her why this was a good thing. It's an actual person, who stood up at a young age and said "I'm proud of who I am and what I look like. The people who comment negatively have no bearing on who I am." and not just a blond/blue Barbie that's been run through color-changing. She thinks it's great.
As much as I'm not a fan of Disney I do like Z and would love to see her expand beyond their limited boundaries. She's a great role model.
ETA: I just showed her an article with Zendaya's comment and GR's apology. She stated "at least she apologized." to which I responded "that was not an apology. That was called back-pedaling." She asked what "bohemian chic" meant. I showed her Google images and asked if Zendaya in that gorgeous white dress looked "bohemian" in any way. The comment was flat out racist and Zendaya was on point. #teachablemoments

Yessss! I thought, Hey it's that guy! I didn't know he became a transwoman! And he gets a Barbie and that is so progressive of Mattel! And then I though, No. No wait. I'm doing it again. That is totally not the same person. And then I actually looked Zendaya up and found the Oscar comments about her hair.
