He was eating like a champ yesterday but the last time he actually latched and ate was like 12 hours ago. He finally had a dirty diaper about 4 hours ago but other than that he's been dry. We finally broke down and made him a formula bottle because we could hear his tummy growling but he wouldn't latch when I would try! Help!!!!!!!
Does your hospital have a lactation consultant you can visit? It sounds you need to. Good luck!
She actually came and talked with me this morning before we were discharged and he was eating at the time so we didn't talk about it. I'll call later if he still won't latch.....it's only 5:15 here.
Gabe was sleepy - stripping him down to a diaper or at least opening his sleeper worked. He also needed a shield for a few weeks. It was a lot of tickling feet, rubbing his back, and blowing on him. He could also be overwhelmed by the new environment (our boys basically pitched a fit once they realized they were stuck with us, not in the hospital lol).
We ended up in the ER after a low blood sugar incident at 4 days and not being able to wake DS. He ended up having a swallow study done as well because of bile in his spit up. We couldn't wake him at the pedi office to eat at all, breast or bottle.
After being admitted the LC said he was slightly tongue tied and sleepy. The LC were he was born found no issues though we had two low blood sugar incidents there. I ended up pumping only the first week and feeding by bottle then supplementing. Once I was pumping enough for a full feeding I went back to the LC and she gave me more tips to keep him awake such as stripping him to his diaper and laying him on a flat surface. I also used a nipple shield. He was just a sleepy baby and we had to make sure it didn't go too long between feedings the first few weeks.
That ER visit scared the crap out of me, but the LC at that hospital was so much better than the one were I have birth.
Did your milk just come in? DS did that when mine came in and it was a few hours of sheer panic before I realized I was just too engourged for him to latch. I would pump and ounce or 2 and then offer him the boob. Another plus- it was already flowing and he didn't have to work as hard for it.
