My 2 story foyer isn't far and brings in a good amount of light plus there is decent lighting. The foyer is going to be white so choppy isn't an issue. The only wall that really faces the foyer will have wallpaper to tie the two colors together. Not that that stops me. My main level has like 6 colors.
I like the second color you posted. The first reads purple, at least on my screen. I love bold colors when there is good lighting, but would definitely pay a painter!
No green. I'm sure you have made it look good in the dining room, but I don't like it in that space.
Would you be willing to paint your banister white? I think that would add some nice contrast if you went with a really deep wall.
We're looking at doing a light/dark blue combo in our entry/stairway/upstairs hallway, but I think we're going to do the darkest color only in the hallway (open to the entry with lots of natural light).

It's hard to tell in the pics, but they almost look devoid of color and more black.
We painted our bedroom a dark navy (similar to mrswindycity's dining room) and really love the moodiness of it. So I think navy can work, assuming it gets enough light, but it nights to be a true navy.
