so, I never take vitamins and I probably should. two options I'm interested in:
- pre-natal vitamins: my nails are HORRENDOUS if I try to paint them. they grow well on their own, but I just painted them twice a month ago and my nails have horizontal breaks in them and started breaking off yesterday. it makes me so sad, because I've collected a bunch and now I can't use them (I paint my toes all the time and they don't have this problem). I know cuticle oil would probably help too, but it's hard to remember to do all the time.
- gummy vitamins: because they're like candy! nft.
however, when I looked at them at safeway they were so expensive! is that normal? I guess since I never buy them it seems crazy to spend $15 on a bottle like that, but maybe my frame of reference is off. do any of you get them at supplements places? is that cheaper?
We usually buy vitamins/supplements through H's company for the corporate discount, but Safeway is definitely not the cheapest place to buy vitamins. Check the Vitamin Shoppe or Super Supplements for better prices. Also, Walgreens does a lot of buy one get one specials on vitamins.

My H takes the gummy multivitamins. They are more expensive than the regular type of multivitamins, but my H isn't good with pills, so this is his best option. He gets his in bulk at Costco, I think it's a little cheaper that way.
I've tried taking a multi-vitamin before at night and in the morning and I always get an upset stomach. So I bought the gummy children's ones. But I always forget to take them.

I'd recommend a prenatal, for sure. It's complete, and it has the extra iron your hair and nails need. They have gummy prenatals, btw. Also - Costco is a great place to get vitamins. They're super cheap and you get a ton.
I get my prenatals when they go on coupon sale at costco. I buy the max number of bottles allowed. They stay good for a while. If you're trying to grow your nails/hair consider adding biotin too. I've been taking those for almost 4 years now and my nails are pretty strong and my hair is shiny. I see tiny baby hair growth in my hairline too.
As for the gummy vitamins, if you're taking a prenatal that should cover you for a multi vitamin too and this one might be redundant. And gummy vitamins have a ton of sugar in them, so watch out for that.

I currently take the gummies from Costco. My doc suggested yesterday that I start taking prenatals (even if we're not going that route for a few years) and said the Costco ones were just fine.

ah! this is awesome.
thanks everyone - I'll see if H is up for a Costco trip soon since we haven't been in a while. if not, I'll try out one of those supplement stores.
I do a multi-vitamin and a fish oil capsule as well. Are you supposed to take prenatals if you're not trying to get pregnant? I've heard different things on that front.
I don't think it matters, but people talk about them a lot on the S&B board because they are supposedly good for your hair and nails. I can't see why it would be a bad thing. And I guess someday we plan on having kids so it can't hurt to start early!
i take gummy prenatals. you should try. and yes, you can totally take prenatals any time. a few friends i have get sick when taking normal vites so theyt ake prenatals and they are better.

Ooh, maybe the non gummy prenatals would be ok for me then...
I'm another vote for prenatal's. I buy the target brand and also buy the target gummy multivitamin for Dh. Getting him to remember to take something every day is way to difficult especially something that would require getting a cup of something to wash it down, so the gummy was the way to go.
We buy the Costco gummy multi-vitamins. I just picked up a bottle of pre-natals at WF the other week, so maybe when I run out of those I'll try the Costco ones.
joenali, I know it makes you seem like you're 80 years old, but I just bought one of those weekly pill cases and put my vitamins in there. That way I can see visually if I took them every day, and on Saturday evenings I just refill for the week.

samesies.
Another pill sorter here!
I have this thing, since I have 3 vitamins and 2 prescription drugs that I take on a daily basis.

Both my mom (retired hairdresser of 28 years) and my Gyno said that it was ok to take prenatals even if you aren't trying to get pregnant and that prenatals are good for hair/nails.
Although I have a suspicion that my mom is also telling me to take prenatals in hopes that I'll have a baby, but whatever, I know my gyno has no ulterior motive.
Your body will flush out any excess vitamins that it doesn't need.
Thank you for this! Glad to her your gyno told you that - I just never have asked mine about it because I had never thought much about it, but I have the worst nails ever so if this helped them grow out a bit, that would be amazing.
Just be warned it's not a quick fix. It took me at least 6 months before I starting noticing a difference in my nails and over a year before I saw a difference in my hair.
I'm about 4 years in now and my hair and nails are noticeably more healthy.

My doc told me to take prenatals regardless of TTC/pg status, since they're so complete and have everything you need.
