Because I haven't yet lost enough sleep over this decision!!! Anyone can feel free to chime in, but I know Fox will have a stroke of brilliance for me.
Okay, so we're going with two rows of three 6'' can lights each, spacing them between the ceiling beams. One row will be on the TV side of the room, one on the couch side of the room. 8 foot ceilings.
Here's the part keeping me up tonight - Where should the lights over the couch be positioned in relation to the couch? If we do them in an even spacing with 6' between the rows, the lights will end up 2 feet in front of the couch. Is that bad? They'll be on a dimmer and with six, I don't think we'll have to keep them on full brightness.
It would be really hard to position them behind the couch. Are we going to be blinded by them if they're in front of the couch?
Yes everything neeps said! 6" cans in an 8' tall ceiling would normally be spaced in a 6-8' grid pattern. The light diffuses a lot so you won't be feeling like your in an interrogation or anything. Personally I like the lights to be just in front of the couch because it's nice for reading. They are going to be on a dimmer so they'll be completely adjustable if you think they are too bright after they are installed. Try doing some Pinterest or Google Image searches for LR recessed lights and you'll see the lighting pattern on the floor is broad circles that blend nicely together to create an even wash of light. That is one of the reasons recessed lighting is so popular.
