I'm considering buying a Prius and am looking for some reviews. Does it handle well? I'm particularly interested how it does in ice/snow. Comfort, maintenence issues, etc...Love it, hate it or, eh - it's a car.

I've had mine since 2004. I love it. It has almost 100k miles on it. I don't drive it a lot in snow and ice. I think mine doesn't handle as well but I know the newer ones are better than the 2nd generation which I have. Getting winter tires helps a lot with handling as well. I would totally go for it, it's a great car!

I have currently have a Prius V and I cannot exactly speak for how it drives one ice or in the snow, I can say I've driven whiles it pouring and it stays in control!
As far as how it drives, I think it is comfortable, and very spacious. There are however some odd features to the car, a passenger cup holder, which bugs me, and the center console opens only to the driver. Other than those two things I love it.
But one feature I really dig, is it has different driving features. Eco, EV, and Power. Most the time you will drive in Eco, when you are in parking lots or driving under 20 mph, you will be in EV(which is all battery mode), you have to manually switch to Power, because it relies on the engine more than the battery. I've personally never used Power mode.
I average 44.5 mpg, and I'm a lead foot.
My previous car was a 3rd gen Prius, and it was my favorite car. It handled very well, but it felt more like a compact car.
We have a 2006 Prius. It has 120k miles on it and is still running great. Again, no snow or ice experience, but we love the way it handles and is very comfortable inside. DH averages 49mpg.

I have a 2009 and really like it. I have found it to be OK but not great in the snow, but I'm really bad at driving in the snow so that might be the problem-- my husband has no problems with it, so I think it's probably fine. My mileage varies from about 50 in the summer if I don't use the AC to 44 in the winter when I'm using the heat. Using temperature control definitely affects the mileage and, since I'm a cheapskate, I try not use it as much as possible. I'm in MA, so there's no way I can get out of using the heat in the winter, though. I think it's a great car and most people I know who drive them would also recommend it.

DH's parents traded in their truck for a Prius about a year ago and have loved it so far. They love the gas milage and how it drives. As for snow handling, they live in an area with 200+ inches of snow a year and haven't complained yet so it can't be too bad.
I have a 2007 Prius and I LOVE it. 92K miles. It's roomy (fits 5 adults), has a big back area behind the seat on top of that, gets great MPG (I get 47), and is designed well. Like, I feel like the controls are exactly where they should be. I do think mine sucks in the snow/ice though. The car is so light and so low to the ground, it has crappy traction. In a mild snowstorm a few years back, we couldn't get it out of its parking space, the wheels just spun. DH's civic had no trouble.
We're considering a Prius too - are there any battery issues? how's the maintenance?
Tires, oil change and a windsheild spray tube replacement when a mouse ste through it. We've also just recently replaced the 12 volt battery (regular car battery).

My husband and I live 300 miles apart and commute over the Rocky Mountains every weekend to see each other in our Prius. No joke.
We have studded snow tires for the winter- totally worth the investment. Quite frankly, with the right tires and driving I think it's safer than most SUVs in the snow- it has a lower center of gravity. You only need torque to get your car going faster- if you are a safe snow/ice driver, you care more about stopping than going faster.
My only worry is the clearance but we haven't had a problem in the 80k+ miles on the car.
I bought a Prius last year and love it. There are some little annoyances. I think someone else mentioned the cup holders. Instead of little pockets on the doors, there is one cup holder. Also, it took me a little while to get used to the real window. Due to the shape of the car, looking out the real window is different.
I live in NY and was also worried about driving in the snow. Unfortunately I couldn't really test it out because last winter was so mild but I had no problem in the snow we did get.
Another thing that I noticed is that people really can't hear you coming. A couple of times now people would stop me to say something about wow, I didn't even hear you. So I try to be more careful around bikers and the barn cats where I ride.
