Has anyone read this book? It scared the crap out of me in grade school, but I absolutely loved it. I still think it's one of the scariest books I've ever read.
Apparently I like being scared. What is a book that seriously freaked you out? I will add it to my list.
I read American Psycho a couple years ago, but I skipped the really gory bits. So basically lists of skin care products, clothes, and menu items at silly restaurants.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill made me sleep with the lights on. I gave it to a friend and he said it terrified him. It's a ghost story so I don't know if it would be as scary if you weren't a little creeped out by ghosts.
Growing up the Dollhouse Murders was really scary to me.
Ditto. That book freaked me out.
City of Masks - Daniel Hecht There were a couple scenes that freaked me out a bit.
Communion: A True Story - I just recommend you don't read this book while smoking pot. No reason. I didn't freak out at all over it.... ummm... no further comment.
ETA: Oh and Helter Skelter. If you feel like going a little crazy. Yikes.

I wasnt scared by the book itself. But living and working in NYC as you can imagine there are a lot of bums here and a lot with long hair and beards... i still think every one of them looks like Manson lol
The Doll House Murders! I remember wanting to read that book as a kid. I'll have to read it now. I've been reading books that I never read growing up but always wanted to. I just finished The Headless Cupid and The Egypt Game. I think I would have liked them better as a kid but I was always curious about the stories.
I like ghost stories. City of Masks is on my Kindle. I'll have to add Heart Shaped Box too.
Wait till Helen Comes was one of my favorite books when I was younger, and is (I think) why Helen became one of my favorite names.
But scariest book ever for me has been Helter Skelter. I made the mistake of bringing it on a family vacation to a cabin in the mountains. I finished it in the first two days, and then was terrified to even look at the windows at night for the entire rest of the week. Such a bad decision on my part.
I just added Heart-Shaped Box to my list (hopefully it isn't too bad - sometimes I am better at reading scary things than watching them in movies). They have it available at the Philly library for ebooks.
Then I discovered that Joe Hill is Stephen King's son. Interesting!

Wait Til Helen Comes! I loved that book, too. I might have been a little overprotective of my younger sister for a while after reading that book... I read it again a couple of years ago and I thought it held up pretty well for what it is.
But I don't really read scary books. I can't even remember the last scary book I read (which isn't saying much, because I barely remember yesterday most of the time).
Oddly, I like spooky movies, especially ones from childhood. My sister and I will sit down and watch The Watcher in the Woods in its entirety to this day.
I loved Wait til Helen Comes. I was freaked out for weeks after I read it. Books don't usually freak me out like that, but I do tend to avoid anything that's really considered horror. Scary movies on the other hand- can't get enough. I tend to sleep with my rosary under my pillow.
