I just got a PM from someone saying they didn't mean to be offensive, but Obama is destroying our economic system so he can declare Marshall Law and institute a New World Order. She doesn't understand why Obama is bringing in Syrian men but not offering asylum to persecuted Christians.

My head is about to explode.
I bet I can guess which person said that. I almost replied to her on your status but knew I'd be so rude. I didn't know who she was to you so I let it go. But ugh at the shallow prayers for the family she knows while not caring at all about the families she doesn't.
She's a member of a bible study group I no longer attend. I bet you can't guess why
I haven't seen a whole lot of bigotry. I guess I'm lucky. There's a lot of "house the homeless before the refugees" though. There are a crap ton of homeless where I hail from so I can understand why people could be I but peeved.
People suck . I just keep thinking about that photo of that Syrian boy dead on the beach from a few months ago. Their babies are no different from ours. For us to be so fearful of a few that we are willing to turn our backs on thousands is shameful.
Thankfully my social media is pretty clear of those who feel the need to share their opinions on this.
But we have a few refugee camps here near here, and some of the military families were all "omg is that safe?!" I don't get the fear of them being here. It's sad that people have such a selfish mindset when these people have been through so much.

I am so sorry Mel. I thought that was you that Stan quoted. I am so sorry you're dealing with this.
I amcompletely disgusted by some of the people I know. I can't believe the anti refugee talk, it's shocking how hateful it is. And the islamaphobia is really close to religious persecution, if not already there.
Really, how Christian of them. I guess I read a different bible. This is why I don't go to church anymore.

What gets me is the headlines I've seen pop up about the number of state governors who supposedly don't want to accept any refugees. That one just doesn't even compute for me. Then somewhere I saw that the Hawaiian governor would welcome them and I was like, high-5 Hawaii. That's Aloha.
Hawaii is where my dad's family first entered the United States when they were trying to get away from Chinese communists in the 50s and 60s.
My FB feed is a mix, but probably more people who are anti-refugee. It makes me sick. I can't understand how people can be so cruel and heartless when they see suffering people.
I have noticed that I'm having an effect on a few people, though.
Like our best couple friends - they are from rural NC, pro-gun, super conservative, probably would be anti-refugee. But instead, they called me yesterday and asked me to explain why I don't believe terrorists will come in with the refugees. Then they asked for sources to share with their friends from back home to show them they're wrong.

That was good. Made me feel better.
Unfortunately, I think we are much more likely to experience domestic terrorism than we are to unwittingly harbor ISIS terrorists disguised as refugees.
I really like this Slate article ("Alabama poses a greater risk to Syrian refugees than those refugees pose to Alabama") . Yes, I know Slate is VERY left-leaning (which is probably why I like it!) and the super-right may dismiss it simply for being from Slate.
