Your story, writing in general, NaNo, a past book, whatever.
I was wondering if anybody else had certain things that remind you of your story whenever you see or hear them? It can be a song that you think fits a character, a "face claim" where you've taken somebody's appearance for one of your characters, a quote, or something else.
I have a handful of songs that bring me back to the story I'm writing now every time I hear them. A lot of these were things I thought of in 2011 or 2012 the first time I went through it, so some of these are really long lasting. Queen's "The Show Must Go On" is the prologue of the story, which I brainstormed while listening to leading up to 2012's NaNo. (Anybody else write a prologue over 50k into the story? Just me?)
Like I mentioned in the synopsis thread, I'm dealing with elemental magic in the story and they form a circle in my version of it. All of them have their own symbols which make me think of my book every time I see some of them. (Ex. a hurricane is the symbol for Storm, a volcano is Lightning, etc.)
I have a few other ones too but I want to make sure I'm not totally insane before sharing the extent of it.
I kind of went the opposite direction as you. I was writing a scene last night at a campfire and my characters were playing music, a guitar, banjo and violin so I pulled up youtube and listened to "today" from "if i stay" and it got me in the mood to write that scene.
However, last year my novel took place in the Olympic Peninsula so every time I hear someone mention it or see photos or whatever, it takes me there.
I did meet a random guy in TJs that was flirting with me and he was kind of cute, so I'm basing my male main character's looks after him, lol!
Not really anything yet this year...it's based loosely on several places I've visited.
Weird story: Last year's novel was about Alzheimer's Disease. I based it somewhat on my H's personal situation with his dad. The song I seemed to hear over and over from September 2014 until June 2015 was "White Sun" by the Doobie Brothers while we were in the middle of trying to be long distance care givers. I never remember hearing that song before last year and then we were hearing it all the time
Unexpectedly, FIL passed away in February 2015 in Michigan but we didn't have his memorial service until June 2015 so more of his family could participate. Part of the remarks we wrote included a few lyrics... from White Sun by the Doobies...
Horizon of blue, hills are rollin' Walkin' with you through a field of red stones I been confused from voices callin', callin' to me Where the white sun has shown And I slip away Down by the water And I slip away Down by the sea
The old man is weak, but strength comes from him A smile full of youth, and a gleam in his eye His garden is green and seems overflowin' And his dreams await in his rockin' chair sky
Since June, I have not heard that song on the radio unless we have played it on our own iPods.

My grandfather, who was jokingly called a French frog and had a frog collection, had the song "What a Wonderful World" at his funeral, his memory DVD, etc. For the couple months he was living with my aunt and uncle he bonded with one of the kids at her in-home daycare. The kid didn't really talk, but he always went on about Poppa.
On [eta clarification] what would have been my grandfather's 75th birthday a couple months after Poppa passed away the kid brought a frog he had never brought before to my aunt and uncle's house. If you squeezed its hand, it played a song you wouldn't expect for a stuffed frog... "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong.
I'm not really one for signs, but some things just seem too flukey not to be.
