My husband was passed over twice and had exit papers signed etc. He got picked up on his third look by some miracle. I know every branch/situation is different though.
It is a rough environment these days:/. I hope they give him a timeline soon so you can start making plans.
He does get one more look, next year. But, he does not think it will work out for him then, either. Above-zone selection rates are abysmal.
It gives us a good long time to determine the "what next", I suppose. And, thankfully we are both employable, so one of us should be able to find a full time job for the after-military move... However, in the meantime, we get to play sit and wait - the carrot if DH waits for the army to push him out is enough to mean we'd need some hefty incentive to not wait for it.
So, we have decisions to make, and options to consider. Lots to think about. In the meantime, I guess we both get to update (or, in DH's case, _create_) our resumes.
I'm really sorry, Audette. If it helps, my H was passed over for promotion during the first look a couple of years ago, but was picked up the next year. It's such a mindfuck when it happens, especially when there isn't an obvious reason for it.
This is going to sound nuts, but I really think he should talk to the Guard or Reserve about getting those last few years in that way. At least you'll get the pension in the far off future. I don't know how it is for his rank coming in, but it's worth a try. And in my state, it seems like deployments are pretty voluntary right now.
AGR is something he is considering. However, it sounds like it is a low chances right now - not many slots.

Eh, I figure it's one final FU from his last commander, really...

Even if he doesn't do AGR, doing four years of weekend warrioring would be worth it for the future payoff, and maybe there're more slots?
I'm not sure he wants much to do with the military after the way things have gone. It's just been one mess after another most of his career. It's been frustrating to watch, to be honest.
He may qualify for TERA, too, so there is less incentive to look at NG or Reserves.

Audette, I am so sorry. Damn. I wish that I had something helpful or useful to share, but I don't. Your DH has gotten the raw end of the deal and it's not right. ((Hugs))
Thankfully, I think we'll land on our feet. DH seems to be taking things better this evening than last night (he was told, unofficially, that he wasn't on the list yesterday), so I think mentally we are moving in the right direction.

If he goes the reserve route, definitely talk to a prior service recruiter. H's recruiter was not and 3 years later he's still dealing with things that weren't addressed when he enlisted in the Guard (prior service Marine).
