I am at a complete loss as to what get my 10 year old. Her birthday is near Christmas so I have an extra gift to worry about. She doesn't have much on her list - some games that her grandparents will likely get her. And an electric scooter. $300. Not sure about that one.
We normally don't spend much on them but DD2 has asked for a $240 American girl bed (it's the only thing on her list). So I'm thinking a bigger gift. DH is against the electric scooter - I'm Not a huge fan but can't think of an alternative. And we still have her birthday to think about.
Thoughts? Normally we spend &50 on birthday and Santa /parents combined is $ 150.
How do you feel about electronics? $300 is enough for a decent tablet or small laptop.
Based on what I see with the electric scooter some kid in the neighbourhood has, that would be a "nope" for me. It just looks like trouble, plus exercise is good. I'd look at these: www.kickboard.ca/collections/teens
What's she into? Art, you could get some real supplies (a nice watercolour set, sketching pencils, good papers, etc.). A sewing machine?

dd1 turns 9 the week before Christmas, her Christmas gift probably won't help you- she asked for a kayak. But for her birthday I asked her if she would rather I bought her presents like normal or I gave her a GC and took her to Justice and she could buy whatever she wanted. The Justice GC was the hands down winner, with lots of squealing. I bought one on one of the gift card resale sites for 25% off already to stretch it more
She already has a kobo and an iPod and the kids have a chrome book to share, she has a regular scooter. I just bought her a tonne of back to school clothes which in retrospect I should have saved some for Xmas. She still has indigo gift cards from last year's holidays. I'm stumped.
I'll look at those lists. Thanks so much for the input. My 8 year old is much easier!
for Christmas she is getting: - Lego friends pop star tour bus (she's Lego friends obsessed) - a handlebar bag for her bike - walkie talkies (not kid ones, she wants them to play spies, I figure they will be good when she's roaming the neighborhood with her friends) - timex ironman watch
She also wants the where's Waldo travel edition book, anything else Lego friends, science stuff, sewing stuff, the newest Pegasus book, the newest water fire saga book,
She's not into dolls and despite having a bunch of AG dolls from DHs aunt just isn't into them.
