I know that there is a site that people usually give when someone is looking for legal advice, but I can't think of it for the life of me. I need a fairly specialized lawyer, and none of my friends know anyone familiar with that area. Google is bringing up a bunch of shady sites.
state or local bar association, martindale.com, avvo.com (I don't have personal experience with avvo)
avvo.com is kind of strange though. I wouldn't trust the ratings and listings necessarily. First of all, it has been listed at an office address I haven't had since 2007. Second, it has had a rating for me since the day it first launched, I think assigning points based solely on the bio on my old firm's website, years ago, and not based on people's reviews or anything. Which is kind of arbitrary?
Avvo is just a marketing site. Your rating will not change at all whether you have 100 positive client reviews or 500 negative ones. It's completely based on how much you do to "build up" your avvo profile (linking to other sites, adding photos, listing publications, etc). Of course, to get a perfect rating you have to pay them for their professional level package.
Although I guess Martindale charges people for stuff too.
